Hi THR Members,

I have just moved to the Madison Wisconsin area and am having trouble finding a range to join. I'm running into ranges with limited facilities / hours or private ranges with lengthy wait lists due to membership caps. Does anyone have any recommendations in the area for me within a ~45 minute drive max. Looking for a rifle range (min 100 yards) and pistol range (min 25 yards)

Thanks!
Comrade Mike

There is a free public range near Blanchardville, which is about 25 mins. south of Mt Horeb. Range has 8 100 yd. benches, a 50 yd. range with, IIRC, 2 seats, but enough bench room for 6-8 standing only lanes. I take a 16" stool if I want to sit down. And a 10 yd. pistol range, which can be elbow to elbow on the weekends.

Look for Yellowstone Lake State Park. Do not turn left to go to the park, stay on the main drag straight. Range is maybe a mile or two past the Park sign. Keep your eyes open, the range is easy to miss. It will be on your left. If you are looking, you will see it, (or hear it) The place was rebuilt 2 years ago and is top notch. Covered benches, tall berms, no range officers. We are all adults and are expected to act like one. Private ranges that cost hundreds of dollars to join are not as nice as this.

Early is better, before 10 am or after 3-4 o'clock. I don't think there are any posted range hours. Between these times, on the weekend, it is rush hour. Though the 100 yd. range is rarely filled, it is busy Oct.-Nov. by guys getting ready for deer season.

The place is closed on Tuesdays so the cops can play.

Before you join a private club, check this one out. You will be impressed by the facility.
