just bought my first hand gun

just picked up my first handgun ever..... S&W Sigma 9MM

I've got a couple old shotguns and rifles including an old Springfield 03 but this is my very first hand gun. not quite sure why it too me so long to get one.

heading to the range to shoot it for the first time tomorrow. I picked up a 100 box of remington 115gr. hopefully they work ok, if not the range is at a gun store so I can buy whatever they have there.

it fits in my hand really well. I have to be honest, if I had the cash I would have got the Springfield XD as it felt the best to me but the Sigma felt almost as nice in my hand and is much cheaper.

I have noticed the heavy trigger weight and it feels gritty as well, not smooth at all. i read in another thread about sending it to the Texas S&W warranty gunsmith to get that fixed. I'm going to put a couple hundred rounds through it first and see how I like it before I even consider any mod.

Welcome to THR!! Congrats on your first of many handgun purchases! Nothing wrong with a Sigma, don't let the Sigma bashers get to you! The warranty work you speak of has been discontinued, but I'm sure there are other places or maybe even that same gunsmith that can do a trigger job for you. I was so close to buying one in November and I did not think the trigger was bad at all, but the deal fell through. Good luck with it! Shoot it lots!

just got back from the indoor range. shot about 200 rounds. no failures of any kind to report. everything with the gun is great, the shooter needs tons of practice. this is much harder than it looks. i did get a few groups together but they were not where i wanted them. lesson learned today, need more ammo!!!!!!!!!! hahaha

The problem is, buying the Sigma because it was cheaper than the gun you really wanted, then turning around and spending more money on shipping and trigger work.....suddenly, you realize that you could've bought the gun you really wanted in the first place.

The Sigma is a solid gun, tho, and you may find some online "do it yourself" articles on how you can improve the trigger yourself, if you're so inclined.

Congrats on the purchase and may it serve you well. If you are not planning to carry the gun then you can search youtube for videos on doing your own trigger work but I would caution to just smooth it out and avoid clipping springs and what not. If you are going to carry it then you may want professional work if any at all. Their are people of the opinion this will get you screwed by a prosecutor for a "hair trigger". You could always just shoot the snot out of it which is the funnest way to smooth out a trigger.

You may also want to look to pick up a cheap 22lr pistol. You can find a used one around 200 or so and it really increases your range time. For another couple of dollars you could of doubled the rounds you shot. I found when learning pistol and rifle these were the best investment to learn all the basics and pistols sure can be tough to shoot compared to longarms.

Congrats on the first handgun. There will without doubt be many more of them. Shoot the crap out of that thing, even though its a 9mm you may want to already start thinking about reloading. 100/k for ammo is a pretty good deal.

I had a Sigma 9VE for awhile, I really wish I hadn't sold it but I did, and honestly it was kind of redundant, I had a couple of other 9mm pistols that were similiar sized or a hair smaller, a .40 on the way that was the same size/slightly shorter grip, plus a 9mm conversion barrel for it, see I'm still trying to justify selling it almost a year and a half later. XD might have felt a touch better, but just think of it this way- the Sigma's slide looks to be about a third smaller than the XD's! So there!
