    Having both of the "shooters" synchronized along with the camera catching the smoke (which seems excessive) from the shots on a still camera would be exceedingly difficult. Maybe not impossible, but difficult. It looks to me like some doctoring happened with the picture.

    yeah, but remember that this was at the tail end of some of the nastiest chapters in the Chicago mob wars. They had a pretty good reason to be on edge back then.

    Don't SWAT teams use somewhat larger version of things like that for dynamic entries in some cases? I can't imagine detectives or patrol officers carting these types of things around, but I think that thing's Model M2A10 is still around . . .
