Either one will let you compete in several types of competition.
AS in all things involving guns, and frankly most tools, know your mission first. Then choose the best available weapon/tool.
Any other method, short of dumb luck, will have you chasing your tail. (nothing wrong with dumb luck)
You could get a national match AR and do the same thing. The nice thing about the AR is you could get a separate upper for the NRA Highpower match that is more competetive.
With a single stack 1911, you could compete in IDPA, USPSA, Steel Challenge, EIC Bullseye matches, and probably a couple of others.
