Looks like a fantastic weapon, awesome grips, chambered in a deadly cartridge, and then I see the ported holes on the side of the barrel. Is there any way to get this gun non-ported? If not, would the small ports it come with really be horrible for SD? I'm running out of double action .45LC options, and this one looks really good.
 
I don't agree that porting is bad for self defense guns

I work for a P.D. in one of the 40 largest cities in the country. We have about 1000 officers. All uniformed officers are issued compensated Glocks. Having shot hundreds of rounds from "Close Combat Hold", and hundreds more in no and low light conditions, just in the last year or so, I have never been adversely affected by the porting. Never heard any other officers complain either.

i am looking at that same gun. if you get it , please let me know what you think of it.
 
if muzzel flip and recoil is not a problem, go with a ruger. they are indestructible. but from what i have read online and tests in the gun rags, the ruger and taurus are a lot different in felt recoil and muzzel flip. im sure that the porting on the taurus has a lot to do with it as it would most certainly reduce felt recoil and muzzel flip.
 
Taurus is pretty disappointing in that aspect.
However, you could always buy the 6.5 inch barrel and have it cut to 4.0 inches, move the front sight back and there ya go. 5 rounds of .45LC in a 4" package without the porting.
Also, with higher powered Colt rounds, you get a good bit of fire leaping out of the barrel in low light conditions. So, maybe porting isn't the worst thing in the world on a 4 incher for SD.

51 ounces??!! I know I'd never carry it. I might if I was hunting with it, but for self defense it'd hang in my gun safe.
 
I hafta agree, that's a whompin' big handgun for carry; but I don't know if that's your purpose. I see from your last thread you're interested in shooting 45LC, but I'm not sure,

(a) why you've settled on 45LC in particular; or

(b) how you envision using this gun (e.g., for field carry, or home defense, or concealed carry [regular or occasional?], or what?).

Care to elaborate?
 
I've decided I probably won't use this or any other 45LC for home defense, but perhaps as a good woods backup or in a bad shtf scenario, where reliability rules. I'm thinking of just going to a 4" GP-100 in 357MAG to cover all my bases though.
 
Is this your first revolver? If so, I'd say the 4" 357 is a better place to start--and really, will do almost anything a non-handgun-hunter is ever likely to need a handgun to do. And the second revolver should be a reloading press.
