I sometimes see holsters listed for sale that say hey will fit a K frame with a 3 inch barrel. Will an L frame fit in a holster for a K frame?

Depends on the holster, but if the holster is molded for the revolver then most likely it won't. The L has a slightly larger frame than the K.

Thanks, that's kind of what I thought. Any idea why there seems to be more holsters for a K frame with a short barrel then for an L frame with a short barrel?

Maybe because there are more K frame guns with short barrels to need holsters.
A short L frame is still a big gun, sawing it off did not reduce the bulk by much and they are very much a niche product, not real common.

A good molded holster made for a "K" frame will not fit an "L" frame.
In addition to the slightly larger frame, the "L" frame has a significantly larger diameter cylinder.
