In the spirit of all the "this gun vs that gun" threads I thought I'd post one I've been thinking about.

My main carry gun is a Kahr MK40 Elite98 and I love the little guy ... very comfortable and concealable piece, that shoots pretty well for such a small gun.

But a few months ago I was in my favorite gun shop and I stumbled across an STI LS40 and it got me thinking :p

So what's the general opinion on these? I imagine they are well made guns based on STI's reputation.

Overall it is larger then the MK, but the grip appears to be about the same length and its a tad thinner, so it would probably make as nice a carry piece as my Kahr.

I wonder if the LS is a more accurate then the Kahr?

Well I can't tell you too much about the LS40 but I have an LS9 and had a K9. The LS is a good shooting little gun and the sights work much better than one would think. I like mine and got it to replace the Kahr, which i despised. If you like SA trigger pulls, and want a slim carry gun the LS is worth its weight in gold.

faustulus,
What in particular didn't you like about the K9? I've been pondering one for sometime (or an MK9) but wanted a gun with a safety and came across the LS9, which is now my current leading contender.
Thanks!

Wow! thats an old dug up thread :p

Well, I sold my MK40 to finance an AR-15 and I regret getting rid of the Kahr (although I'm glad to have the AR).

So I'm jonesing for a new carry gun even more ... too bad I can't afford the LS40 or I'd have one ... I'm saving my pennies and while I'd love to have the STI I'll probably end up with a Steyr S40 (I have an M40 already)

where did you dig up this old fossil?

USGuns,
I didn't like the trigger pull on the K9. It was long, although not espeically heavy, and when it finally broke my finger was canted at an odd angle, this left me pulling shots. The grip felt comfortable and I really wanted to like the Kahr, but I just didn't shoot it well because it didn't fit me. The LS was more what I am used too. Excellent trigger, similar size. I happened to find one on gunbroker for a great price ($400) and couldn't pass it up.

measurements

faustulus,
Can you tell me something about the measurements of your LS40?
The website says it's 7inches long overall but does that include the beavertail?
How long is the slide itself?
Thanks!

Mine is the LS9 but the measurements should be close. My micrometer says the slide length is 5.9" I can take some pictures of it with some of my other guns if it would help.

faustulus ,
Yeah pics with other guns would be great! I'm actually interested in the LS9 as well.
Thanks!

I wonder if the LS is a more accurate then the Kahr?
With such short sight radii, I wouldn't count on major accuracy difference between the two at the defensive distance of <7mtrs.

Reliability would be the most telling factor as to which model I'd choose. I'd bet on the Kahr being more dependable due to its more 'enclosed' design.

But the STI sure looks handsome!

I'll get some pics up this weekend.
As far as accuracy of each gun I can't say since I could never shoot the Kahr well enough to determine how accurate it was, but I can hit head shots on an IPSC target from 15 yards with the LS easily enough.
I had three missfeeds with my kahr in 150 rounds, and none with my LS, not that that says anything, but just a 'for what it's worth'
