Kahr PM 45 update, advice

this is my 3rd post about this gun, its beginning to piss me off terribly.

Shoots great (so far 400 rounds only 4 failure to ejects in the first 150), but more than occasionally ejects the brass directly into my head.

Sent it back to Kahr, they say its fixed... but its not. Just got it back 5 of 20 hit me in the head, mufs, and glasses....

Is it fixable ? Or should i dump this thing...

I soooo want this gun to work for my carry but i cannot live with this problem.

Any advice greatly appreciated...
 
motorcycle helmet with a face sheild......sorry......all I have ever known to fix that is a recoil spring, but then you mess with reliability of operation....
 
I had similar trouble with the PM9, but my issue was a failure to go into battery after the break in period. I sent it to Kahr twice and got the same thing: a short note saying the pistol was fixed. But it wasn't. I finally got Kahr to replace it and I sold the replacement in unfired new condition at a loss. So, the Kahr PM9 cost me several hundred dollars in ammo, shipping, and gunshop margin. And lots of my time.

I too really wanted that PM9 to work...

My advice is to not send it back to Kahr. You'll just lose more money in shipping and blow more of your time. Below are some real options.

1) Sell the current gun (and tell the buyer the issues you are having to keep it honest!) and get something that works. You'll have a tough job finding a 45 that is as small and thin and light but the shorter 1911s aren't bad and the Glock single stack 45 isn't bad either. S&W 442s just work as well... I’m not trying to sell you on anything specific here… just get something that works.

2) Send it to Cylinder and Slide and have them tune the ejection pattern.

This option means more money and time into the gun which you may not want to do. I hear good things about these guys but I don't have any personal experience with C&S so don't take this as a personal recommendation.

3) If you have gunsmith experience we can talk about how to tune ejectors, extractors, breach faces, burrs in the chamber, etc. to fix your problem but I assume since you sent it to Kahr you don't and I don't recommend you bubba fix a Kahr micro given that the tolerances need to be spot on for the thing to work given its size vs. the round it fires.
 
Are you saying that it is impossible to duck when you pull the trigger? Or maybe you have an exceptionally large forehead.

Seriously, I'll take one of mine out maybe this weekend and see where my brass is going.
 
For some reason, brass in the face does not bother me. I always wear goggles or glasses.
 
I have a PM45 and it throws the brass right over my rt shoulder. I have never had one hit me in the face, I have had a few hit my ear muffs. Frankly I believe it is the design of the gun, if you'll look the brass cannot eject out of the side. The clearance just isn't there.

In short I'd say you can

A: call KAHR and try again
B: sell the gun for a BIG loss
C: deal with it

Not what you wanted to hear I know, but honestly. I think it is the truth.
 
if it's a great carry piece and intended only for that, the brass hittting me occasionally in the face personally would be a minor issue. with adrenaline you wouldnt notice it. but thats just me

Sell it and get a G36, G30, or micro 1911. You will not regret it, I haven't.

Well, if you're a tinkerer, order a new ejector and extractor (for spares) and start shaping metal. The ejector on my CW9 doesn't look like there are many options for shaping like there would be on a 1911 ejector but a little bit of change can have an effect. Perhaps a combination of re-shaping very slightly on the ejector and extractor will accomplish what you want to do.

I like my CW9 and, if I were getting hit in the noggin with brass, this is what I'd do. Better than taking a loss on a trade, IMO. And---I like to trouble shoot and tinker;)
 
Try a heavier recoil spring. But you may need to upgrade the mag springs as well to maintain reliability.

What ammo are you using?

-- regarding getting hit at the range. Sure I can deal with it there, but if I'm going to rely on this for self defense I don't want to be feeling I'm going to take my eye out if I have to use it.

-- I also left out that I am a lefty, which enhances the problem a bit but I can't imagine a lot...

If this fails I'll at least have a 700$ paper weight :)

I had the same problem with a different brand weapon, sent it to the factory and they replaced the extractor which fixed the problem. Can't be afraid to pull the trigger because you might get hit in the eye, especially if its a self defense weapon. I'd continue contacting Kahr to get it fixed.
 
Question:

ARE U A LEFT HAND SHOOTER?
Leftys are going to get hit more often than a rightie any day of the week.

Hell even my g19 bangs my head every once in awhile. I being a lefty pay no attenton to it. I have been told that lefty's are not the smartest people either:neener::neener:

I have a PM45 that I have sent to Kahr four times. I am waiting for it to come back now. It has been a series of constant problems, but I have never worried about the brass hitting me. Every gun is different. My advise to everyone is to Never get a PM45. It is a total POS. I have a CW9 that is a dream to shoot and carry, but the PM45 is beyond Kahr's ability to make a reliable gun.
 
My PM45 has run better than 99% including the 200 round break in period. This tells me KAHR has the ability to make a perfectly reliable PM45, because they did. Come to my house with some .45 and I'll gladly show you.
 
deepsouth, totally agree, when one gets a lemon as Ed 4032 did, one tends to downgrade the entire company and that exact gun model. He got a lemon, it seems, but that is not the norm. I would trust the PM45 as I do my PM9. I just love my PM9 for all its attributes.
 
I feel your pain musicman. I bought one and thought I had found the perfect carry gun. Shooting at the range it zipped nice one hole groups out to 40 feet. Then I took it to the tactical class. The magazines broke when ejected and they hit the floor. Also the long trigger pull was not conducive to good groups when shooting on the move. Traded it for the Glock 36 and it performed much better in the tactical class. I am now on the hunt for an STI Escort.

Yea, I wish they would get rid of that damned plastic floorplate.

With the 9mm mags, at least you have the option to switch them out for the metal ones, not so with the .45acp mags unfortunately.
 
I guess if one is doing the tactical shooting classes etc, dropping the magazine with the plastic floor plate could be an issue. Glocks are plastic and I don't hear about them breaking, so my guess is that kahr plastic floor plate that broke could have been a bad plate also. My PM9 magazines do not drop free and for me that is perfect. I don't carry a spare magazine when carrying and accidently hitting the mag release button for my PM9 will not shoot the magazine all over hell either. It moves out about a half inch and stops. That suits me fine.
 
Just dropped off the PM45 at my local, and hes confidant he can get the extraction tuned...

So - lets see and hope for the best...


For now - ill just keep on carrying my trusty R9
 
I deffo like the g36, i almost got it a couple of time...i already own and LOVE my 30. When you put the PM and 36 side by side...the size difference is substantial...

Thats what makes this PM45 so appealing... if you can get a good one - or get it working, its size and accuracy are pretty impressive. Not to mention - its eating anything i give it...

Im gonna stay optimistic about it..
