Keltec Sub2000 First Shots and Sighting In

M*Carbo upgraded sight solves much of the cheek smashing needed from the stock sights. Well worth the money.

I just ponied up the money for the M*Carbo upgraded one that @BoBo522 linked to. It made sense when adding up what I wanted to do with it.

I wanted it to be very functional and reliable as it is a traveling companion with an accompanying Glock 19x.

Just tried it out today and sighted in at 25 yards with some 147 grain Berrys hand loads. No failures even with these minimum charge loads. It does dump brass in the crook of my off hand elbow though.

Anyone else have to smoosh their face against the buffer tube to see the sights? I’d like to avoid a red dot to save the folding feature but this may take some getting used to.

The only time I've shot a sub 2000 I ended up with a black eye try to get my face low enough to see the sights, I'm just too big physically to shoot it

Never had any malfunctions with my gen 2 Sub 2k (Beretta mag version).
But like others, I have a hard time getting down low enough to use the factory irons. Must be the shape of my face, there's as many who say irons are fine as there are who say they're useless.
I mounted a gen 1 See All Sight, wanted something non-electronic that didn't take batteries. Works fine out to 50 yards, fine for me. I mounted it as far forward as it'll go, Sub doesn't completely fold up but enough it'll fit in any of my laptop bags. There's side mounts from MCARBO or Red Lion but swinging the optic to the side for folding makes it harder to store IMHO.

Are adjustable stocks, as on the 2nd gen, a no no in some places?

Interesting question. One of my thots with this gun was for travel, in case things should happen to go to (redacted). Just stash it in the trunk.

I think in CA a rifle can't have an adjustable/ collapsing stock if it has a removeable mag. Fixed10 rounder is OK.
So yea, in at least one state.
But if I was traveling to CA very few of the firearms I own would be legal.
I DON'T think the SUB2k breaks any state laws only by virtue of it's folding.

I'm pretty sure that the Ruger PC9 is 50 state legal, and it takes down into two pieces. That's the play if you want to travel into blue states with a long gun.

I never thought about the sight height either. It works fine for me, but I'm 5'7". The sights are short and so am I

This will get you into California if needed.

I would caution anyone who has not removed the grip pins from their S2K should be prepared for one or two to strip during the removal process. Mcarbo makes steel replacements but it requires complete disassembly for installation.

The grip fin is lame but actually does provide a somewhat usable grip.

I put the taller MCarbo sight on mine. I also slapped a Magpul offset mount I had laying around on instead of spend $100+ on a flip to side mount. I put a Sig Romeo Zero on it with a riser & the rifle still folds

I cleaned the Keltec after it’s most recent range trip and spent some time dry firing it and finding a repeatable cheek weld. This was all standing off hand. Next will be to try it sitting and see if it works that way. The taller sight would definitely be helpful but it might require the even higher MCARBO notched sight.

Just a thought, since your looking to buy the higher sight, try notching the one you have?I got the peep sight higher one and it makes a big difference.

If todays testing with my Henry 22 is any indication I can still shoot notched sights on a rifle pretty well. That might actually be the best solution.

I haven’t shot it since. I’m working through the rest of my older 9mm loads and have a new one to finish loading so I don’t want to zero with the old ones just to have to change.

I definitely feel it would be better with a higher sight. If the peep is adequately higher I’d prefer that but the notch sights wouldn’t detract from its intended purpose (handy rifle for 100 yards and closer).

I took it out to 50 yards this weekend with the same Berrys loads. I was testing a 17 & 27 round Pmag. Both worked fine.

The group was kinda large, which I blame on both the load, forgetting my rest, and the sights. I’ve been doing some dry firing and I think I’ve got a good position down for my face where I can see the sights.

Clearly this isn’t a target rifle. That said I want to be able to keep 10 shots on an 8” target from 25 to 100 yards without too much trouble.

I’m debating on doing a load work up just for this gun. Before doing all that I have two loads to try, both using 147 grain bullets. If I do make more gun specific loads I’ll end up with like 4-5 different ones and I just don’t have the energy to keep up.

I don't own one but have sold hundreds and shot dozens including tricked out versions. For me the S2K is perfect out of the box for what it is. It's kind of like an AR7. An inexpensive, bare bones, backpack/survival gun that can do in a pinch. They're lot's of fun to break out every so often but not enough that I would spend money modding one. I have way too many guns I would rather run the ammo through. My experience tells me that a lot of S2K owners feel the same way. Note to self. Bring the AR7 to the range next time.

I regret letting my Sub 2000 in 9mm go, took Glock mags and shot well. Used it to get into more AR gear, as the sub was just a fun gun for me at the time.

I may pick up a box of factory ammo to run through it. It hasn’t seen anything but my Berrys hand loads. They’re a very weak minimum charge load, but they cycled fine. They also dump brass right at my feet. They don’t seem very accurate from this rifle though. The factory ammo will set a base line for me.

Mine did well minute of iron site mostly w/ WWB and Blazer aluminum. Damn I wish I'd kept it, but that's before AWB ended in 04 I got tons of Glock and KCI Glock mags that could feed it and a RDS or RMR would be fun

Perzactly. And it is an incredibly clever idea; totally (obviously) safe when folded, probably not actually illegal anywhere (mag capacity, maybe), uses mags most have, light, compact, and mine always ran.
Dammit, KelTec, make it a little better, and do something about the sights. Please?

I had the aluminum receiver predecessor, the Sub 9. SN 11X. I liked it a good bit, but I did have some malfunctions that were hard to clear. Also, the face of the rifle where it folded got marked up quite a bit around the chamber. I don't know if these were early teething issues that worked out in the Sub 2000. I will say the 9 had a better trigger pull than the polymer receiver 2000.

J Shirley, wow...never heard of the predecessor.

You guys using a notched sight; how can you use an open sight that is that close to your face? Personally, love peeps because they do work best close to your eye. The peep halfway down the barrel on the current Ruger 9mm is a silly idea. Too, you pick up lots of sight radius by having the peep further from the front sight.
The Sub 2000 is such an innovative idea; the second generation seems a slight improvement. I'd get another one if it were improved enough to make it an 'all the time' PCC, rather than a 'fire extinguisher' kind of thing that it is currently.
