Looking for a project for the coming winter months, and I think I'd like to build a Kentucky rifle from a kit. I used to see these kits all the time, but hardly ever now.

Anybody got a recommendation for a good maker?

Thanks,

Michael

Guy I know who's Waaaaaaaay into the muzzleloading thing is particularly fond of Tennessee Valley Muzzleloading. I think their kits run in the 500-700 range, depending on options.

For a wider range, Track of the Wolf has all sortsa kits -- I always liked the looks of their Tennessee poorboy kits at around 450-550.. but you can find everything from Golden Age to Besses to 1803s to Hawkens outta them.

and now... I'm gonna send ya off to the black powder crew.

foooooosh... BOOM! :D

Wahh-elll, I have very limited experience with the kits sold by Cabelas, Redhead or other large outfits.

I tend to buy from the smaller guys and you can get anything from a $200 kit that will give your hours of pleasure to a gun that Daniel Boone will be comfortable with. It all depends on what you want to do and your level of skill.

The more skilled you become, the more primitive your kit becomes. If you want something that is authentic (but requires some skill), about the best kits I've come across are Jim Chamber's kits. Well fitted but require some inletting. Parts are quality and if you have trouble (defective, Jim is unhesitant to replace them). However, Jim is only one of many and my first was from The Log Cabin Shop and the second from Golden Age Arms. Like I mentioned before, it all depends on your skill level and what you want.
