Gentlemen, I have been working in my spare time on a Kephart built to the exact dimensions as per Mike Crenshaw’s drawings that he posted in the original Kephart thread.
We were conversing about my making a small run of these when he went radio silent.
Here are some details:
I made this knife as exactly as my skill will allow to the original.
This includes a tapered tang (very hard to do right)
Distal blade taper
Instrument grade Walnut handles with the “pinch” and bulges that act as a guard (and work Really well)
Pin placement as per original
“Airfoil” shaped blade in section
High carbon steel, I used 80crv2 an excellent steel. I heat treated the blade using the old ways of a propane forge and oil quench.
Hardness is HRC60 which is just right.
The balance point is exactly on the forefinger as specified.
A dangler American leather sheath
I am making a run of 10 of these knives, some guys have already spoken for a knife.
I am limiting these to THR for now, not going on my website.
I may make more later on, but for now I’m going with 10.
This is I believe the most accurate Kephart knife made since the originals, and made here in Western North Carolina. I think Mike would have liked that.
