Is it just me, or does it seem that Kerry's campaign complains too often when the Bush camp attacks? I don't remember this much snivelling in prior presidential campaigns.
For example, the Kerry surrogates are all over the newspapers and on TV expressing shock that the Bush campaign would use images of Hitler in their ads. However, the images of Hitler are from a moveon.org ad (which, of course, the Kerry campaign has no control over--wink, wink). The snippet from the moveon.org ad follows footage of Gore shrieking and Kerry yelling. Seems to me that showing the other side out of control is fair.
Another example. One of Kerry's latest ads, which is designed to make him appear thoughtful, makes references to his book, A Call to Service. Bush surrogates have been criticizing statements Kerry made in the book. And now the Kerry surrogates are complaining that the Bush camp is using quotes from a book written in 1997, and one that is out of print. Seems to me that if Kerry wants to mention that he wrote a book--he is, after all, a Yale grad, you know--then the book is fair target.
Yet another example. For those who are tuning in late to this program, John Kerry was in Viet Nam. In fact, he subtly refers to his service in many of his TV ads. Yet, when Bush surrogates question his three months in country or his anti-war activities in the 70's, the Kerry camp cries "foul" again.
Still another example. Teresa Heinz-Kerry (gawd, I hate hyphenated names) laid into Bush publicly, and received a fair amount of air time. When the Bush camp returned fire by noting the rich heiress' involvement with ultra-left groups, John Kerry whined that his wife was not part of the political campaign and was thus to be left alone.
There's many other examples I could cite, but it seems to me that either Kerry or his controllers are too quick to complain when Kerry gets attacked. GW has been under constant bombardment for over four years, yet he seems to be able to restrain himself and his people when responding to the attacks. Well, there was that comment about Adam Clymer, and Dick Cheney did tell Patrick Leahy what he could do with himself, but those statements weren't for the record, and I find them endearing.
So, what's your .02 on this? If Kerry can't stand the heat of the campaign, can he stand the heat of the office?
