    Sounds like a gangbanger who happened to have braces. The report, though it may be innaccurate, suggests that rounds were fired from all parties involved.

    I personally saw a similar case where a man was saved a possible fatal gunshot to the head. In that case, the bullet hit the outside rim of his spectacles. The rim was metal and it folded up on the nose of the bullet. The bullet was slowed down by the drag of the rim as it entered the orbit and destroyed the left eye. If you can imagine stuffing a napkin into an egg cup, that's what the bullet did with the spectacle frame in the man's orbit.

    This kind of thing also happens with coins, belt buckles, the belt itself, and various other items of clothing and pocket contents.
