Thanks to the new Fl clarification, I can reach for things and not give a d@mn any more :D If they don't like it, too bad.

NavyLCDR:
I open carry everywhere and have never been lawfully kicked out of anyplace. A cop kicked me out of a restaurant, against the owner's wishes, because he didn't like me open carrying. The restaurant owner called me personally and asked me, my family and my friends to please come back and feel free to bring our guns. About 20 of us total went back the following weekend for a luncheon. The Chief of Police was invited for a social interaction, but also warned that we were invited guests on private property and if any police attempted to interfere they would be subject to a lawsuit. No cops showed up (that we could tell, anyway).

That's a cool story. I wonder, though, what would have happened if, when the cop ordered you out, the owner had, in turn, ordered him out...

OMG he's got a gun!!!

Yeah, I've been outed several times...

Here in Vermont, it's getting better....

Saw a guy at the local flea market last weekend openly carrying and it didn't create so much as a few glances and whispers...
I was carrying concealed and nobody ever even knew...

I've been asked to leave, leave it in the car, and even been asked never to come back into some places.... So I obliged them.

It sucks because my right to keep and bear arms is just as important to me as my right to redress the government for my grievences...

Wal-Mart Walk

I am planning on getting my Oregon CHL, but for the time being funds are a bit restricted so I just OC.

To test reactions I decided to a Wal-Mart Walk. I know it's silly but it actually eased any concerns I had about reactions from other people. As far as I could tell nobody even noticed that I had my gun on me.
I even went to dinner with my wife afterwards, in a PACKED restaurant, and the only person who seemed to notice was the nice lady who seated us and she didn't say anything or change her attitude one bit.

From what I can tell most people, around here anyways, are too busy to notice or care.

Or the friendly folks around here don't mind you carrying. 8)
I haven't done the OC thing because Corvallis has local ordnance against it, but walking around on trails and stuff nobody has ever blinked an eye at the folks I go shooting with tromping by armed about like the average fire-team.

Gibson, Florida continues to outlaw the general practice of open carry, but has (effective 17 June, 2001) decriminalized the "brief" display of a lawfully-carried concealed firearm, such as when changing jackets, or if the gun becomes visible when bending over, or reaching above one's head. Previously, any act which allowed the firearm to be no longer "concealed from the ordinary sight of another person" was unlawful.
This was originally intended to be a lawful-OC bill, but got grotesquely watered down as it made its way through the legislature. One sticking point that will no doubt come up very soon is how the law defines "brief" when addressing the period of time the firearm is visible. The law does state, by the way, that the firearm must not be made visible "in a rude, angry, or threatening manner, not in necessary self-defense" to have that "brief" exhibition fall under the new protection.
This is to what sig232 was referring.

I open carry semi regularly. I have only been asked to either leave or put my gun in my car once in 5+ years and 4 different states. The one time was at a Bass Pro Shop and after I called corporate I was told that the store was set straight and that would not happen in the future.

The owner was not present at the time. The cop went and got a waitress who was not even old enough to sell beer and told her he was removing me because he got a MWAG call. I hand delivered a letter to the restaurant the next day explaining what had happened. Before I was able to get home, the owner had called and left the apologizing message and invitation to come back.

Pretty much anywhere except work that I conceal I use the term a little loosely. I frequently "conceal" N-frame revolvers and use OWB holsters.

I think I got made once while "concealing" a 5" N-frame on the way back from a shooting match. I was scooting into a tight booth at Subway and the butt of the gun hit the booth hard. A guy noticed and looked straight at me and I ignored it as I scooted again... and knocked that wood grip against the booth again.

I didn't make anything of it and neither did he.

I have twice had to disclose to a coworker that I was concealing in order to disarm and be legal as we entered a place where it is not legal for me to carry. This is a much bigger problem IMHO. In both cases they laughed heartily. I suspect that laugh comes from the realization that I have been concealing around them for years without their notice.

I have been made before by relatives or friends that have hugged me.

I have one friend who's father had been shot and killed and she has told me that guns make her really uneasy. She hugs me often so I don't wear my gun in her house. I could probably wear a smaller gun maybe in a ankle holster or something but with her, to me it just feels right to leave it in the car.

I guess each situation needs to be analyzed separately.

Never for CC, but one time I was OC in Phoenix and as I walked toward a credit union where my girlfriend was getting cash out, one of the employees outside smoking said "Sir! You can't walk in there with a gun on your hip like that. It is illegal in a bank."
I said, "No, it isn't. Not in Arizona. Are you don't have signs posted."
He said, "Yes, it is. Look, I carry too man. I'm just saying the security guard is going to give you a hard time or ask you to leave".
I said, "That is fine then, I will wait in the car. But just so you know, it isn't illegal to carry openly or concealed in banks."
And he simply said, "Okay".

That is the only time my CC or even OC has been an issue. Granted I haven't carried as much as some people because I've been stuck in California for school most of the year since I came of age to carry and bought my own firearms.

MakarovNik: Have you ever talked to her at length about it? If she is your good friend I'm sure you could explain the ins and outs and offer to take her shooting. Promise that it will be safe and fun and that it might actually help her cope with what happened a little bit. Showing a person with her background that firearms can be used to GOOD is more important than convincing the general public, in my opinion. Many of the Brady Campaigners are people with similar stories who focus their emotions at the object instead of the terrible person that committed the act. They also fail to realize that their loved ones might have survived if they had been legally armed too.

... I'm just saying the security guard is going to give you a hard time or ask you to leave.".

The security guard? If the bank isn't posted, then the guard is just playing cop without any real authority to do so. If the bank manager asks you to leave, that's something else.

I did a stint as a bank guard as an extra job many years ago. Other than when I was doing escort, I was mostly decoration and, like the potted palms, I was supposed to avoid bothering the customers.

I too was kicked out of Bass Pro for OC. Not because of their policy, though; they said the policy was to follow state law, and they were misinformed about the law in this state. After a month I finally received an e-mail from the store manager who acknowledged that it was legal and that when the store opened they were misinformed about the law from the local sheriff.

This varies by state. In some, security guards, also sometimes called "company police" by the state, do have the power to arrest on the property they are guarding.

Didn't like having someone flash his Beretta 92 in literally my face, it was about 2 feet away. Concealed means concealed, not flash your gun everytime you put away your wallet when its easily avoided.

What was your face doing at the level of his belt?

Left handed shoulder holster, he was wearing a unbuttoned button-down shirt and completely brushed the shirt away from the gun to put his wallet away instead of just sliding his hand under the shirt. I've seen open carriers and even have open carried myself so I don't have a problem with that.

St Thomas has been a dangerous place for many years. I used to use a friends house there for vacation. The crack problem in the 80's and 90's was insane. Worse than Queens at night. You almost never go out without a local guy with you. I can't imagine that it got any better. Poverty and a route for the smugglers has turned it into a hell hole.

37 yrs and no one refused me entry because I was carrying, if you do a search you will find we have discussed this many times. If you call attention to yourself you will be known as that guy with the gun. Otherwise no one knows. It's like a insulin, no one knows you use it unless you go and tell them. A good concealment holster with the right weapon is impossible , even for the trained eye to detect. Everyone has something in their pockets.

I was talking to my landllord a while back and for some reason we got on the subject of people in the complex carrying guns. He stated that he had negative feelings about the idea of people actually carrying guns into his office and said he was glad that I didn't.I told him that I was carrying a gun and had been carrying on every occasion that I had been to his office. He was surprised and chagrined as he had never noticed it. He also changed his mind about either open or concealed carry and is now looking for a gun for himself.

Rori, thats what i like ro hear.

I think peoples bad opinions on guns are usually based on ignorance (note that its not the same as stupidity. Were all ignorant to some degree as we cant know everything about every topic)
