I am looking to buy a Kimber CDP next month, and was torn between the Compact model and the Ultra models. The pistol is for everyday carry, likely with an IWB holster. Looking for opinions of the pros and cons between the two models...

I currently own 5 Kimbers

and 4 other 1911s. I own three gov't models, thre Kimber pro models, two Kimber ultras, and 1 officers model. While the compact might seem like a good idea to some I really see no need for a 4 inch slide on the officers frame. I am surprised at how well I shoot my ultras and officers model. I prfer the pro model over the ultra for everday carry but for those times when you need ultimate concealability, I like the ultra.

compact is a great carry size.

IMO, people get over-obsessed with short barrel length in a CCW when it's really the grip that is the hardest bit to conceal.

a 4" barrel still gets you reasonable ballistics out of the 45acp (though not as good as a 5"). if you want anything shorter than a 4" bbl, you should seriously consider moving to a higher pressure round like a 40 or a 9mm--they keep their performance up even in shorter barrels.

I own 2 ultras and now have over 1500 rounds through them. They disappear in my crossbreed supertuck and I recommend them. I have not had the issues some others on THR state they have. With Kimpro tacmags and wilsons they have been 100% even with steel cased ammo after the first 300 rounds. .
