GRETNA, La. (AP) — Two suspects in a botched jewelry store robbery were wounded so badly in a shootout with the store owner and an employee that police have not been able to interview them about a third suspect who was still at large on Wednesday.
The shootout occurred at Breaux's Jewelers in Jefferson Parish Tuesday after one of the suspects, dressed as an old woman with a walker and straw purse, was buzzed into the store.
Store owner Mike Breaux quickly saw through the disguise and had pulled his own handgun by the time the suspect — identified as Kevin Knight — had pulled a .40 caliber handgun from the purse and started to leap over the counter.
Breaux shot Knight in the face, Jefferson Parish authorities said.
Just outside, a second suspect, Dion Lee, began firing through the store window, grazing Breaux's arm with one shot but not hurting him seriously, Sheriff's Office spokesman Col. Robert Garner said.
Meanwhile, one of Breaux's employees picked up Knight's gun and fired repeatedly at Lee, wounding him as he escaped into a getaway vehicle.
Lee later showed up at Charity hospital with gunshot wounds to the neck, back and arm, and was in critical condition, Garner said. Knight, 22, was taken by ambulance from the store to Charity, where he was in critical condition.
Garner said Wednesday that authorities believe Lee was taken to the hospital "by the getaway driver — he or she."
Breaux, 47, was treated by medical personnel at his store. Police did not identify the other employee in the shootout but said he was not injured. Friends described him as "all right but shaken up."
