The flag pin would be in violation of flag code.

Sec. 8. — Respect for flag
No disrespect should be shown to the flag of the United States of America; the flag should not be dipped to any person or thing. Regimental colors, State flags, and organization or institutional flags are to be dipped as a mark of honor.

The flag should never be displayed with the union down, except as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property.

The flag should never touch anything beneath it, such as the ground, the floor, water, or merchandise.

The flag should never be carried flat or horizontally, but always aloft and free.

The flag should never be used as wearing apparel, bedding, or drapery. It should never be festooned, drawn back, nor up, in folds, but always allowed to fall free. Bunting of blue, white, and red, always arranged with the blue above, the white in the middle, and the red below, should be used for covering a speaker's desk, draping the front of the platform, and for decoration in general.

The flag should never be fastened, displayed, used, or stored in such a manner as to permit it to be easily torn, soiled, or damaged in any way.

The flag should never be used as a covering for a ceiling.

The flag should never have placed upon it, nor on any part of it, nor attached to it any mark, insignia, letter, word, figure, design, picture, or drawing of any nature.

The flag should never be used as a receptacle for receiving, holding, carrying, or delivering anything.

The flag should never be used for advertising purposes in any manner whatsoever. It should not be embroidered on such articles as cushions or handkerchiefs and the like, printed or otherwise impressed on paper napkins or boxes or anything that is designed for temporary use and discard. Advertising signs should not be fastened to a staff or halyard from which the flag is flown.

No part of the flag should ever be used as a costume or athletic uniform. However, a flag patch may be affixed to the uniform of military personnel, firemen, policemen, and members of patriotic organizations. The flag represents a living country and is itself considered a living thing. Therefore, the lapel flag pin being a replica, should be worn on the left lapel near the heart.

The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning

If the pin is in violation of the Flag Code, then so is the banner at the top of the page.

It passes my own personal moral code. It's not disrespectful, and in fact represents a site that embodies many of the principles that this country holds most dear.

(And remember, please: The flag is not itself a holy or sacred object, but a symbol of our country. We get in real trouble when we confuse the symbol for the thing it symbolizes.)

Henry Bowman, I like the banner at the top of the page, but it is most appropriate as a page header. it's way too long and narrow, and half a flag with a fade to white would look funny on a pin.

The designs I sketched are meant to evoke the top banner while meeting the aesthetics of a pin.

Of course, doing this at all would only occur with Oleg's permission.

One inch pins can be had for about $1.30 to $1.40 each (with a minimum order of 200). That includes setup, shipping, and everything, so whoever did the fulfillment would just have to shell out $280 for a lot of 200 and then mail out the individual orders. I imagine a net cost of $2.25 or so, or a "retail" price of $3 each to cover the poor sap's time and effort.

If I were to be the sap in question, I'd consider making the price $5 and earmarking $2 per pin to THR's server costs.

Here's a place that seems to make good pins cheaply:

Matt -- the "screen printed" version shown on the site you link would show the header (banner) version nicely (can show fade out color). Pins can be long and somewhat narrow and still look good.

I agree that the banner is not disrespectful at all. It is a good logo that is instantly recognizable to all who have used this forum.

I'm inclined to let Oleg make the call on the art, and on permission to user the site name. Oleg, what say you?

I don't mind the idea. However, the designs I saw above have sharp edges and don't really stand out as much as I'd like them to. Let me think just a bit on this, maybe I can come up with a design or have suggestions for one of the existing proposals.
