Uncle Jack O'Connor did several hunts in India and, if memory serves, his wife used a 30-06. Personally I would want something bigger but you can't argue with success. A 12 ga with slug should be very persuasive.

Jim Corbett used .450-400 double, a .275 Rigby (7x57), a 500 double that shot a reduced cordite load as the gun was originally black powder, among others.

These were used by him specifically to hunt and dispatch Bengal tigers and Indian leopards. Yeah, I know, “modern bullets” and all but one never can seem to argue with very big holes.

That sounds to me like a non native/nuisance species of critter introduced into an area if there ever was one. Besides the obvious risk to humans in the area, I would think that the impact these things would have on both native species and livestock is significant, not to mention the fact that I believe all tigers have some type of protected status on an international basis. It seems to me that 1, there is some type of intervention that should be done to deal with this, and 2, whoever is responsible for introducing a breeding population of tigers into the area is at fault.
Some guy in central Ohio let several Tigers, Monkeys with AIDS, Panther, etc. and committed suicide. The local PD hunted and killed most of them, but they said some were still roaming around. If memory serves me right a hunter ended up killing one. As far as the animal thriving on its own I highly doubt that to be true.

I have reason to believe that there's a Bengal tiger on the 65 acres I hunt on, it's common knowledge that theres tigers around where I hunt. There's nobody to call and get rid of them so I'd like to ask, would some of those shoulder breaking 3in magnum slugs be enough to stop an attack

Have they been declared invasive or anything by Fish and Game? If you shoot it, can you keep it? Geez Louise, what a mount!! BTW, walking around after dark might be a very bad idea. (I know, no Sh*t);)

Let me see if I got this right, there's a Bengal Tiger (or more than one) living in the 65 acres that you hunt and you're going to hunt there? Like the doctor told the cancer patient, get your affairs in order!

Dude... You are not thinking this all the way through!

If a Bengal tiger could escape the circus/zoo/smuggler/trainwreck and be prowling your 1/10 of a square mile, then there is no reason to not believe there could also be an elephant that did the same thing and is now waiting just beyond the brush line to turn you into peanut butter between his toes.

I'd say .416 Rigby at the very least!

Why settle on "just" a .416, John?

Or, if on a bit of a budget

Those ought to do the job just fine, in my in-experienced opinion! But, if you require just a bit more class funds are no object, there's this little jewel.

How ya like them apples, boys?

There are black Panthers in GA. Grandpa saw one. Saw a zebra while squirrel hunting. My best friend growing up saw a peacock behind his house. Told my folks I saw a zebra. They asked what kinda dope you smoking son? I was 12. So no dope. This happened in the early 90s. Folks get wild animals as pets and they escape. Stay safe and be prepared.

Alright, I'd like to add a couple things here:

1. There are things in the wild that man cannot explain. See the chupacabra thread. I do not deny that you saw a tiger, I simply question that there is a breeding population in your area. However...

2. The state of Arkansas denies there are mountain lions living and breeding here. I can assure you, they are in fact doing both. I have seen them, and have dealt with them. But that's another story for another thread.

3. All jokes aside, go buy an '06 and have done with it. Whether or not you kill a tiger with it, it'll be an excellent addition to your battery of arms. A 180 or 220 grain bullet will positively flatten anything that dwells in Runge, Texas or for that matter, on the continent of North America.

4. In reply to Meeks36: the scaredest 12 year old me ever was, was when a peacock called behind me on a foggy morning squirrel hunt. I swear it made my blood run cold. But after I saw it, it wasn't so bad. Ma stuffed it and cooked it like a turkey, and it was rather good as I recall. It wasn't until a few years later we actually knew what it was, as we'd never seen one.

In all deadly seriousness, I hope you can find a way to solve your problem Harry. If you haven't looked into Jim Corbett I again urge you to do so. His work in India at the turn of the last century is quite... educational shall we say.

Good luck,
Mac

I'm gonna be honest, I don't know if those tigers are actually breeding. Only 1 person said they saw cubs, but it wouldn't matter because so many people privately own tigers in Texas that theres no need for cubs to keep the population up.

I think the challenge would be actually seeing it before it's on you. Big cats like a tiger have an uncanny ability to silently and quickly sneak up on their prey from behind. Quick crushing bite on the neck and lights out. Good news, no pain, bad news, not much a human could do to stop it.

I personally would be a nervous wreck hunting the presence of a 700 pound cat. Call me chicken....cluck! Lol

I would be more afraid to the Rhinos!!

There is no caliber for Bengal Tigers, You are dead before you can pull the trigger.

Marlin always had Jim around to take care of these things!

A couple of Jaguars have been spotted in Big Bend a few times, Arizona and New Mexico report similar sightings... There are certainly enough Tigers in private hands here to establish a breeding population, is 4 enough to start a population? Possibly, they would have no real competition once theyre grown, while theyre cubs a mountain lion or perhaps a very agitated coyote MAY be able to take them but I suspect that Mom and Pop can take on all comers, theres reports of the fathers sticking around, depending on how good they raise and teach their offspring there is no debate as to who the new apex predator is in the Lonestar state besides us. I highly doubt this happens however I believe the Jaguar has a better chance of returning dominantly to the state than a few rogue tigers making a new nation.
