I hunt at a club. Most stations are <100 yds.

I have a 556 left over and don't want to put $$$ scope on it. Thought about a Green Laser. I've had one on my bow and really like it, but at 5Mw it will only show up out to 35-50 yds in daytime.

I know 5 Mw is legal max. Overseas they can sell over 5Mw. Thought about ordering one of those.?

So, what are some good alternatives?

Open sites are "normal", but 70 yr old eyes don't love them.

Red dot (green) is a fair option, but a quality one cost as much as a scope and 100yd is a little far for accurate shot.

In scopes, we only use 50mm and up as hogs and deer move near dark. 40mm is too dark.

I’d make sure your state hunting laws don’t prohibit lights (which typically include lasers)

Some states allow a legally blind hunter, accompanied by a licensed "sighted" hunter, to hunt with a laser. The blind hunter is the only person allowed to "pull" the trigger of the weapon with laser. I don't of any other exceptions or allowances.

Looks to me the question implied using a laser in place of a scope. Regardless, the maximum power (no matter the wavelength) allowed by federal law in this application is 5mW. Up to you whether you want to risk violating federal law.

Left off====is there a noticeable difference in light output of the different 5mw?
IE- do the optics or whatever make any difference?

There can be. Not so much with a green but there can definitely be a difference with a <5mW vs 5mW laser. But at low, low light / dark of night it's no big deal at all. However, under those conditions, the 5mW beam will be noticeably sharper and not scatter or diffuse as much as the lower power. But once again, the lower powered ones are more than good enough at night. I'm not pushing any brand but I do know that most, if not all of Crimson Trace products are a full 5mW. Even though Lasermax is mostly rated at <5mW for both red and green, they too are a very good device imo. Most of my preference for those two brand names is based on the fact they have a more liberal az/el adjustment as compared to some others.
