LE trade ins

I have been seeing a lot of Glock 17 Gen3 and even up to Gen 4 and 5 showing up for anywhere between $375 and $450 and have been playing with the idea of getting one just for a range gun and use for USPSA. Thoughts on Gen 3 and LE trade ins?
All Glocks can be sent back to Glock for service, no questions required.

Glock Gen 3’s are solid. Tons of OEM and aftermarket options available.

Had an oppertunity to buy a couple of G-23s cheap so sprung. one was a rusted up piece of junk inside, was from CT, the LEO that had it should be fired for incompetence as should his supervisor for not inspecting his troops. I have a full set of Glock tools and parts so do work on Glocks, so just fixed it. Suprizengly the NY gun was the best I have seen in a long time. I put Novak adjustable sights on the right 23 to put a 357 Sig barrel in it. Today they have new pins, springs, Ghost Maker Rocket triggers, titanium plungers, Novak adj sights.

But usually they may be a bit worn on the outside but due to inspections, and being a daily carry, they are kept in good operational shape. I have had several in the past.

One thing I learned about buying LEO trade ins, do a deep clean. In many cases a simple field strip and wipe down won't cut it. Sometimes it looks like all the cop did was run a bore brush through it and wipe it down. The Glocks weren't too bad but my Italian police Beretta 84BB and 85BB were filthy.

FWIW, if anyone needs more enablement, I've ordered over a dozen firearms from King's.

They're one of my preferred 2-3 online firearms sellers.

Those Berettas are what I regret not jumping on a few years ago when the were more plentiful and nicer:confused:

I have a gen 3 17 with a round count well above the 100k mark, that is shot often, cleaned rarely. It is my primary "range training gun". At some point one of the slide rails went AWOL from the frame, but the gun still worked. The frame was replace free by Glock. If I didn't have this pistol, I would be chasing down one of the sub-$400 pistols you described.

I scored one today, $240.53 out the door. A local shop had it on Gun Broker so I can pick it up at the shop and avoid shipping. Gen 3 with night sights (dead I am sure).

The city police in my hometown hired a lady officer who raised enough stink about the Sig P226's in. 40 that the department was using having too much recoil that all 5 officers were issued P320's in 9MM and the 40's were traded in to the local gun store. I got an immaculate P226 for 500 bucks. My buddy got there right before me and he got the one that had laser grips for yep,500.

As a cop and LE firearms instructor I would be okay with buying a police trade in. Though Id much prefer to see it in person before buying or buy from an online store that has a good condition rating system.

Like others have said, most cops are not gun guys. My department shoots more than most and most of our cops shoot less than a thousand rounds a year. Mandatory training will cover about 500-600 rounds and most patrol cops will come in and practice on their own every couple months or so.

On the other hand you do have gun guys who will take all the free ammo they can get. My gen 3 Glock 22 that I was issued had over 14k rounds through it by the time I gave it back to the department 2 or 3 years later. I shoot my current duty gun, Gen 5 Glock 17, a ton. It's may main practice gun, my competition gun, and my work gun. But it's my personally owned gun so nobody is getting it as a trade in piece.

That's also a consideration. My issued gun, Gen 5 Glock 45, is a back up gun for me. It only has a few hundred rounds through it at this point. It rarely gets shot. It hasn't been out of the safe in months. If I were forced to turn that in and it got traded out, someone would be getting an almost new Glock.

My trade in G22 gen4 came to me like new, with working night sights, for $279. When I got it, the same dealer had police trade in 50rd boxes of 180gn HST cheap (as I recall, $18/box), I wish I bought a bunch, the G22 loves it!
