For the SHOOTING activities that you actually do- what is the least amount of shotguns you could do them all with? "Heirlooms", "vintage collections", and other safe queens don't count unless you want them to. For me, that number is 3 : 12 gauge magnum auto for most hunting activities (turkey, dove, waterfowl) 12 gauge 870 as a back-up to the auto, and also a 20" slug barrel for HD and deer when and where I can't use a rifle, and a 20 gauge O/U for quail. Similar threads in handguns and rifles.

I'm not really a shotgunner, so my opinion may not even count.
But I can do all I need to do with my old Savage 20 gauge pump.

Dove occasionally, squirrel a couple times a year and buckshot in it when running deer dogs.
It does what I need it to.
If I got into waterfowl, I'd likely get something else.

I use a 16 gauge double barrel for upland game and a 12 gauge for almost everything else. Since I hunt waterfowl including geese I use the 12 gauge a lot more now, a Model 12. And it can put a big hole in ya if you walk in my home with evil intentions. ;)

I could go with just the one but I have two. The beauty of a shotgun!!!! :)

Good topic for a thread!!!

I own over ten shotguns but realistically could get by with one. The only one I have that wouldn’t fit the bill would be my SA-459 Turkey. Growing up on a ranch I knew a bunch of hunters. Most of them had one shotgun that was used for quail, dove, pheasant, geese, rabbits, squirrel and turkey. No one hunted deer with a shotgun. I tend to use just two of my shotguns for everything but turkey, a FABARM L4S 12 gauge and a SX3 Walnut Field 20 gauge. I strictly hunt though. If I shot Trap I know I’d have a dedicated Trap gun.

I could do 4:
Remington 1187 12 ga Sporting Clays - Sporting Clays, Trap, Skeet
Remington 870 20" Rifle Sights 8 shot extension - Defense (a good offence)
Beretta 390 20 ga - Dove , Quail, general fun
Remington 1100 20 ga Sporting Clays - Teaching the young and beautiful in my life

Do interchangeable barrels count? Because I may be able to do all with 1 shotgun. I like Mossbergs and with various 500 barrels, I can use just one 12 gauge.

But of course, I would need a second 20 gauge side by side for fun.

I only need my Browning 12 ga BPS upland special. 22" barrel with My brother Brian says dad bought it in a pawn shop in South Dakota in the late 80's. My brother Jim duck and pheasant hunted with it. . Dad gave it to me for my 15th birthday. This and some ice fishing gear is the only thing my dad ever gave me. I never got along with my dad and only hunted with him one time ever and it was with this so that means something.

I shot a ton of ducks with it, some geese, crows, gulls, cranes, doves, pigeons, pheasant, grouse, woodcock, rabbits, squirrel, coons, skunks, ferrel cats, ect... I also trap shoot with my friends and brothers with it and in High School I even placed 2nd in state for Sporting Clays with it. I never hunted deer in shotgun zone but my brother Brian shot a deer with it in shotgun zone when I was a little kid

As of late it gets drug around the woods and brush in the fall looking for grouse with the dog. Here is me and the dog a few years ago with his first ever grouse

This is the last gun of any type I would give up both for sentimental reasons and because they are just so versatile. Anything from puting duck and rabbit on the table to deer and home defense. I would never go hungry with this gun.

4 at least.
Trap gun. BT 99
Skeet. Weatherby SA08 20 gage
Sporting clay. Beretta a300

Love me some skeet. If I could add another fun skeet gun it would definately be a 410. I've been through several but I'm keeping the little SxS yildez.

Squirrel-410 single or bolt
Rabbit/dove-20 pump
Turkey-16 pump
Slugs/buck-12 sxs or semi to stay on target and quick to a follow up (close deer or potentially hog)

Probably 4, maybe 5:

1) Trap.
2) Upland.
3) Turkey.
4) Home Defense.

5) Waterfowl (though I haven't hunted geese in many years).

Could do most of these things with my 12 gauge Maverick 88 with spare barrels (Home Defense and Waterfowl), my 12 gauge Mossberg Model 9200 (Turkey and Waterfowl), my 20 gauge Winchester Model 1300 (Home Defense and Upland), and would need a new shotgun for Trap (was just looking at a CZ 612 Target).

Least amount? With screw in chokes and chrome lined bores you could probably handle everything with one shotgun, maybe two if you're a trap shooting fanatic and want an appropriate stock and sans the safety.

Any modern 12 gauge shotgun with interchangeable chokes can do anything I might reasonably need a shotgun to do.
I have a few extras, but I could certainly get by with just one shotgun.

Almost all of my shotgunning is upland hunting with a 12ga side by side. I could realistically get by with that.

I don't need to put a number or a reason to have a shotgun.

Wanting is enough to buy a new gun. If I like it and the price is right as long as I have the cash -- it's mine.

I have a number of firearms, only one is a shotgun. I wanted an all around all encompassing shotgun that "could" be used for everything even though it might not be ideal for anything. I also wanted a top mounted thumb safety, not a cross bolt safety so that I could use it right or left handed.

So after much shopping I settled on a Mossberg model 835 pump, the price was right and it had two barrels with 5 chokes, one barrel was rifled. It will shoot anything 12 gauge from 1" mini shells to 3-1/2" magnums and any rifled slug, bean bag or flare.

It has been reliable and has served me well, I have no regrets.

2, but since each needs a back-up the actual number would be 4
A matched pair of 12 gauge O/Us for pigeon shooting, ZZ birds, Bunker, feral pigeons, driven birds and clay targets
A matched pair of 28 gauge O/Us for bird hunting - quail, chukar, pheasant, grouse

All would have fixed chokes, AAA walnut and some nice engraving

Perazzi would be preferred
