Leave alone or camo it

My thoughts are if I ever get one with this rifle . Is have a bobcat mount hanging off a limb & hang under it take it out when I want ta use it . Just me but think it would be a cool piece of Fur Art .

My usual hunting rifle is a Ruger 77 in K Hornet . But I put a NV scope on it & am only allowed to hunt with it from Feb.1 thru March , 31 for coyotes here in Missouri. So I broke out the 85 for daytime calling . The mirror finish on the blueing is well like signaling with a mirror for all to see

Most shooters are going to appreciate the K-Hornet ream job. Spray paint, not so much.

I really, really, really think the issue of glare off a firearm is greatly exaggerated. Do a wrap on the barrel if you're that concerned, nothing permanent.
Thanks I'm not gonna paint it. just needed some reassurance to keep my mind in the right place . Sometimes I just do stupid stuff on a whim

I would never paint such a gun. You can order coban bandage material by the roll from amazon for next to nothing- its that self adhesive sports wrap tape that comes off easy and won't leave a residue.

Like he said...
I've gotten a couple rolls of it to see how it does. No residue, easy on easy off. Gives some texture and a small amount of bump resistance. Only downside is that being cloth based, if it gets wet you'll wanna remove it fairly soon.

When I got into coyote hunting and cammo everything became the rage I watched some hunting videos to how well it worked. One was from a guy hunting in central NM where it is mostly scrub juniper and open grass. He wore jeans, a brown calvary jacket, 16" lace up boots over his jeans, a brown campaign hat, and carried a plain wood and blue rifle. He killed more dogs in his videos than any of the cammo wearing guys did.

I used ammo wrap on one rifle and left it there for years. It didn't improve my kill rate one bit but I was in style, at least to other hunters. When I removed it there was a little residue left which non-acetone fingernail polish remover easily got rid of..

I'm gonna leave her blued & wood . But would love a set of Winchester furniture on it matte not gloss like the Browning

Not to derail the thread, but tell me more. I'd like to watch this guy myself, for no other reason than he seems to hunt like I do!

One thing if you wrap it, Id treat the metal with something like Eezox, etc, prior to doing it, and I wouldnt leave it on there, especially if it got wet/damp. Some of the tapes and wraps hold moisture and might make things worse.

Paint on the other hand works great as a protectant, but, its paint.

One thing nice about some of the "ace bandage" type camo wraps is, its easy on, easy off and very adaptable.

One other thing too, you really dont have to wrap the whole gun. The barrel and scope would probably do fine, at least from the "break up" standpoint. Wont save the wood from dings though.

The wood is what's getting the scratches. But think of it as carrying a 2 foot mirror when packing in or out . I run & gun. Go in before the sun's up & get back to the truck mid to late day .call move , call , move ,call ,move try to cover as much ground as possible. Some morning I cover about a 3 mile loop . So the sun is high , me & my mirror can't find a dark spot to sit in . More than likely gonna yank the NV off my Ruger it's laminate & Ruger's matte stainless nowhere as shiny as the 85 & don't mind it getting a beating

Putting camo on a gun isn't really going to fool predators-but it will keep the gun lost in the weeds if it's ever laid down in order to address other more pressing needs at the moment.
Do you use a mirror when predator calling? You can see your reflection in the blueing on this rifle . Imagine a gun metal blue mirror & that is the finish on this 1885 & then add the gloss stock . A 2 1/2 foot blue mirror. Flashing stuff kinda warns critters that you're there .

Pretty much sums it up for me. Rod
To each his own . If I get old enough that I lose my rifle then it's time to stop hunting . Or if I got to hide it then I am doing something wrong & deserve to lose it cause the Warden is gonna find it & take it any how

From all the comments I take it most of them are from people who don't predator hunt . No I will not be painting it . Plus I don't think most of you understand the the finish of this rifle . I own several blued firearms & nothing compares to this rifle . Even my Browning A bolt that's blued & wood .

If you go to a farm store , or feed store or vet supply store , there is something called vet wrap for leg bandages . its clingy and stretchy , but not super adhesive .It comes in various colors , I sometimes wrap a rifle with white for calling coyotes . comes right off without much mess .
I use this as well. But I use it for adjusting cheek weld on factory stocks.

On the OP: I would fear being beaten to death by my brothers if I painted that rifle. I wouldn't do it anyway. But the cool thing is each person has the choice to do what they want.
