Got a friend who is a leftie and is considering a new shotgun this year and wants something a) semi auto and b) lighter than his BPS (which is like 8 lbs I think). I'm usually the go to "gun guy" but when it comes to shotguns I've been making do with a battered 887 I won in a raffle for years so I'm little help.

Top two seem to be the super black eagle 3 and M2, both by Benelli. I'm partial to the SBE, but that's because I've come close to buying one a few times myself so I have a bit of a bias.

Use will primarily be upland game, pheasant and grouse, probably some wood duck here and there.

What am I missing, suggestions on some good places to start?

(I'm going to piggyback his research for a probable shotgun for myself next year, it's about time I upgrade anyway, right?)

Would be sweet if someone did the bottom eject on a semi like the BPS or Ithaca.

Aren't double barrels technically a semiauto? ;)

I've got a left hand SBE, but it's used for ducks and geese primarily. I think it's a lot of excess length and weight for upland. If it has to be semiauto, could you look for a used left hand Rem 1100?

This thread sums up the bottom ejecting semi autos nicely.

The Beretta is unobtainium and the Remington was a horrible debacle that was rushed to market and is definitely one of many nails in Remington’s coffin.

The Beretta is also a 2 shot semi like that old Browning Double auto ( or something like that). Probably not what your friend is looking for.

The 887 mentioned in the OP was also one of those nails. I commend you for putting up with it for so long.

Beretta A400
Remington 1100 (although I fond them to be heavy as well)
Fabarm

For me it would be FABARM first by a big margin. I’ve got a L4S and it’s my favorite shotgun. Second is kind of a toss up between a Franchi Affinity and M2. I have an Affinity and IMO the only real difference between it and an M2 is the Comfortech stock on the M2. The M2 costs considerably more. I’m not left handed so my recommendations are based on right handed shotguns of the same model.

I'll have to look at those FABARMs, have no experience with that company but those are some fine looking guns anyway.

What's the skinny on them as a company?

Caesar Guerini bought FABARM a few years ago as I understand it. Both companies make outstanding shotguns and are out of Italy. Customer service is excellent. FABARM has been around a long time.
