In reference to the 'left handed' thread, I was curious as to the actual statistical representation of left side dominant folks on this forum. So here is a poll.

(Didn't check the poll box on the first thread. Mods, please delete the other thread.)

I could tie my left arm behind my back and not miss use of it for a couple of weeks....

except for my crummy typing, which might or might not improve....

I think the sample set isn't going to be representative of the population, because the thread title will interest lefties disproportunately. You might need a title as boring as "Poll, your input needed please." Fun question, though.

I'm cross dominant (right-hand, left-eye). I shoot pistol with my strong eye. I shoot rifle with either eye but prefer my weak eye.

You are correct. Should start over but I'll just change the title.

Well, doesn't look like you can edit the thread title.

Nope, you can't ... but I can and did. ;)

I also took the liberty of adding the ambi eye dominance options, and changing the poll title too.

Anything else, or will that do it?

I was born a lefty, but Mom and Dad, actually Dad reverse my natural inclination to right handed. As I understand the brain still operates left side dominance and that is true with me. I am left eye dominant. I can shoot left handed even though it is somewhat weaker. I shoot predominatly right handed but with the left eye. I have no problem. Crazy, ain't it but it works. P. T.

I have a related question: what is the most optimal way of testing eye dominance? I usually have the person make a triangle with by overlapping their hands, and then framing a distant, fixed object. Then the hands are drawn closer to the face, eventually blocking one eye and framing the supposed dominant eye.

The problem (maybe a problem) is that the last 4 people I have used this method to test have all ended up being right hand/left eye dominant (same as me), which would seem to be statistically odd. Is there a better way?

The way I was told to check is point your finger (either hand) at an object across the room with both eyes open, like a light switch then close each eye (one at a time) and see which eye stays lined up with the object you pointed at. That will be your dominant eye.

Problem with pointing at an object is that for some people, believe it or not, eye dominance depends upon the hand used. When I point with my right hand, my left eye appears dominant, but when I point left-handed, my right eye appears dominant.

The other problem is that if one eye is just barely dominant over the other, you can see multiple images when pointing. The triangle thing prevents this.

Hey thanks pax, that'll do'er.

Pretty intersting on the percentage of Right Hand / Left Eye.

Bumping this one back to the top because I find things like this interesting.

Yes, I know, I am a dull person... :p

I'm LH/RE, but before my LASIK my right eye was so bad, I shot L/L. Now I'm trying to be a better righty shooter, but it will take A LOT of training to overcome my instinct to reach out and aim on the left.

It would seem that using the dominant eye to aim will result in better accuracy, but by how much? When does the parallax become an issue-10 yards? 20? 100? For aimed rifle fire R/R is going well, but pistol has me doing a L/R and head tilt.

Never heard of the triangle method, tried it, I'm still left eye dominant same with changing hands and the pointing methods too. Mr. Gunnyskox you're right cause me considerable problems until I got a little older. You start trying to retrain the brain and sometimes it crashes the hard drive. :banghead:

I was always righty, left eye dominant... then I had eye surgery and I became right eye dominant. Life is good some days. :)

I'm one of the rather rare Ambi/Ambi people. Admittedly, growing up in regular society, my right is a little more practiced at most skills (my handwriting still sucks no matter what hand I use) but I've been practicing a bit more with my left in light of that. Both eyes seem to work the same regardless of which one happens to be closed.
