If pistol braces are made illegal (like was done with bump stocks), could you take the brace off an AR pistol, get rid of it, and still be legal, assuming AR pistols are still legal?

If AR pistols were made illegal or reclassified as something that needs to be registered under the NFA, could you replace the upper with a 16 inch barreled upper, put a regular adjustable stock on it, and just convert it to a carbine? I have heard you can convert a pistol to a rifle, but not vice versa.

There's no way to reasonably predict the consequences of some hypothetical law until the law has actually been adopted. Until a law has actually been adopted we don't know what the law says.
