Now, before you jump all over me, I have no intentions of wearing one. But my CHL instructor told us that Lee Brown is making any armed CHL holders that enter the city hall wear a pin while they're there denoting that they are armed. Wouldn't this constitute a badge? Also, in effect, doesn't this throw concealment out the window? Anything illegal about this? Also, last question, can anyone here substantiate my instructor's claim that this is indeed happening?

thanks

Who the hell is this Brown fellow and what legal right does he have to make you wear a pin saying you are armed?

I have no idea what you are asking in regard to if the pin constitutes a badge or not. Both are identifying items and neither actually grant any rights in and of themselves.

Wearing a pin does NOT violate concealment. You can wear a full coat with large letters that say "Licensed Concealed Handgun Carrier" and not be a problem as long as the handgun remains concealed from normal view (or whatever the specific statement is about viewability).

Who is your CHL instructor?

For related legality questions, you can contact DPS. Your instructor should have provided you with all the appropriate information. In regard to Brown, contact whatever town he his in and verify it yourself.

Lee Brown is the former Chief of Police and current Mayor of Houston, Texas. As I understand it, all visitors to Houston City Hall must wear a "Visitors Badge" kinda like "Hello. My name is...". Legally armed citizens get a "badge" that is a special color so all city employees and others who know the color code can tell they are dealing with someone who is armed.

Brilliant, huh?

Best.

Well, it beats what we got here. Can't carry in our city hall at all. Wait ..... I'm thinking about the county court house. I don't think I even know where our city hall IS, come to think of it! Nevermind.

Wouldn't it be cool if we get a bunch of CHL-ers to hang out at city hall one day, with our special colored badges?

"Look at that, they're not bad guys after all."

Isn’t this one of the guys that was really fighting against the new preemption law?

Curious though, how do they know if you are carrying? Do they have metal detectors? Do they have cops checking ID’s? By law you are only required to disclose your status to a cop during an official stop and request for identification. No one else has the authority to compel you to identify.

I also would prefer a colored visitors ID pass instead of having to live with the way Florida does it. We have this little clause about where we cannot carry, one of which is "any meeting of the governing body of a county, public school district, municipality, or special district ."

HK,

We still have the same law, but city hall has lots of other functions, it is only courts, city council meetings and such that are restricted. Until just this month, though local goverments posted their own restrictions, but the legislature passed a stronger preemption clause that just went into effect.
