I want to get a new pistol grip stock for my mossberg 500. I really like the feel of the speedfeed solid stock, it feels solid and rugged. only one thing, how do I measure the length of pull on my current stock. the new one says the LOP is 13" and for some reason that seems too short. I dont know what factory mossberg stock measures.

That is the measurement from the back of the stock to the trigger. Most full size rifles and shotguns are about 13".

Yup. Rear of buttpad to the trigger. Center of each, IIRC.

Also IIRC, I believe stock mossberg stocks are 14" or 14.5" Just a note, I put a bantam stock on mine to bring it to around 12" and it shouldered faster, but I ended up thumbing myself in the eye. A pistol-grip stock would probably be great at that length, if you don't have long arms.

I'm just under 6', but I love rifles and shotguns with a short length of pull.

AK's and youth shotguns seem to shoulder so much faster and I get on target quicker.

I would much reather have a 13" pull than the more standard of 14". Being an average arm lenght guy when you are dressed for winter with several layers of clothing you could get your stock tied up in clothing when at the 14" lenght. I have cut several of my rifles and shotgun stocks down and installed good recoil pads to a 13" lenght. Hate the Pistols grips for shotguns as they tend to change the angle from the barrel to stock for me and hit harder when fired.

13.5"-13.75" is average LOP for adult long guns. Youth sized long guns are normally 12.75-13.25"

I agree 110%. If you shoot anywhere but off a bench, short (they should really be called "correct") stocks are really the only way to go, but even more important on a hunting or combat type gun. They just handle so much better, and the shooters size really has nothing to do with it for the most part.

AK's arent "short" either by the way, most "combat" stocked long guns are in the 13" range, or slightly shorter. The M16A2 being one of the odd ones here.

I think a lot of the problem is, many of the gun makers now make their rifles for scopes and bench shooters, instead of iron sights and field shooters, and stock them accordingly. Most older iron sighted hunting rifles also have a shorter LOP than their newer versions. Also, a lot of people only hunt or shoot from a rest, and the longer stock is usually more comfortable to shoot with that way. They purely suck pretty much anywhere else.

Another problem is recoil pads. It seems we have become a nation of wusses and cry babies, and the gun companies have listened to all the whining. These days, its hard to find just a simple "factory" plastic butt plate, let alone a nice checkered steel one, rifle or shotgun. Unfortunately, all they did was add the recoil pad to the "correct" length stock, just making it longer. On the plus side, fitting a plate really isnt all that hard and Brownells has a bunch of blanks available.

Most shotguns have LOP too long from the factory. My Mossbergs were 14 to 14.5" and this was too long. I went to a local clay shooting area and had them cut down the stocks to get around a 13.5" LOP. Much better IMO. It's better for LOP to be a bit too short than too long.

Get a Knoxx with adjustable stock. I've got one on an 870 HD and it's great.
