Less than 60 days to a major election and no panic buying. I'm Surprised!

I'll have to disagree on the economy. Still more jobs out there than we can fill. Stock market is nuts and breaking records.

I believe the reason for no panic buying is because people realized it was all started by misleading news stories and people realized that SCOTUS is never going to allow a full on gun ban!
The stock market is not the economy and the open jobs are ghost positions for the most part. When a company a position that demands a degree, career certs, and experience, but is offering substandard petty wages. Those jobs stay open. It is then used as a tool to get approval for H1Bs to fill those jobs since the company can state, "but we just can't find Americans for these jobs, we need to bring in H1Bs!"

Crime is down all across the board. You wouldn't think so according to some people crying the sky is falling.

https://www.fbi.gov/news/press-releases/fbi-releases-2023-crime-in-the-nation-statistics
Crime rates have plummeted on a national scale, part of that is because a number of states have loosened up and become pro-gun. But the other reason is CompStat numbers are fudgeable. A strong-arm robbery is under reported as a trespassing case. Etc...

Crime is rising in places like NY and CA.

I just bought another 200 rnds of .308 at a decent price below a buck. I wasn't panicking, just have this threshold for all my different ammo so I needed the 200 to put me over that threshold.

I am stocking up on cats and dogs, ya know food shortages. LOL Hell the humane society is giving them away, why steal one. HeHe I kid I kid.

The math says otherwise.

Okay, what math? Please help me to understand how crime rates go down due to gun ownership. Some of the highest crime states are pro gun.

Otherwise, of the worst 10 states for crime rates, EIGHT are pro gun states.

What is really interesting that folks don't seem to understand that every crime stopped by a gun, is still a crime and that counts on the crime rate. You can't get around it. However, it isn't like people with guns stop all that many crimes in the grand scheme of crimes.

Maybe you are going with the claims that things like concealed carry reduce crimes. People liked to point to places like Texas as being a success for concealed carry and crime rate. Maybe you recall the story at the top of this thread where Texas' crime rate dropped 10 years in a row after concealed carry was introduced. That means SUCCESS, right?

Now, Texas got their CHL in 1996 and that article came out in 2006 and is very convincing. Do you know how powerful Texas' CHL program was? It was so powerful, it retroactively lowered the crime rate back to 1992. It was so powerful, it lower the crime in several states such as MA, CA, NY, and ME for several years(from Uniform FBI Crime Reports found online for each state)

Where guns matter in this process is NOT the crime rate, but in individual protections.

Maybe you are thinking of your own state, Florida. Y'all got concealed carry and the crime rate dropped when implemented and then went up the next three years. That's right, Florida carry did not reduce the crime rate.

By quantitative rather than emotional measures, yes, the economy is doing well. And yes, some folks have a vested interest in creating anxiety about any number of things that are not related to material conditions.

Yes, things can always be better, but the World is not on fire. Ginning up hysteria is, simply put, dishonest. My hope is that people see that and don't go out and fill their pickup beds with 9mm and 5.56 just because someone is telling them the sky is falling.

There are better reasons to stock up.

You made three assertions- you got evidence to support any of this?

Violent crime in NYC is rising, but the city is reporting an overall drop in non-violent crime. That is because a lot of it is being under-reported. CompStat numbers can be and are fudged. With NY's legislative actions in reclassification of crime, their numbers magically dropped.

But the actual crime rate isn't dropping.

The issue of under-reporting is nothing new.

The national crime stats are reported through the FBI's UCR system. A number of cities have opted out of reporting.

Yeah - "if it bleeds it leads". Newspapers get all breathy if there is a tick up or down over a short time period, feeding this whole thing. Not being able to understand a trend when you are in the middle of it (except in extreme examples) is a pretty well-known statistical phenomenon (just ask stock traders). And with social data - there is just too much noise in data like that. The only thing you can do is say that trends are WAY down from what they were:

This largely matches nation-wide patterns. Statistically, you currently live in one of the safest periods in American, or human, history (if not THE safest). Little year-to-year blips that get Bloomberg worked up are well within the margin of error for even medium-term trends:

Right? Corporations, farmers hotel work can't find enough workers to fill those positions and yet the republicans hate immigrants. Hard to understand especially when it can take several years to get a green card.
Plus many south American countries have NO middle class. Just poor and rich.
If anyone here says different they have not been there to witness the horrendous poverty there.

And this is why America is already Great! Why else would poor people in So. America want to risk their lives to get here and contribuite to the American way?
No one is running over to Russia, N. Korea, China to get a job or citizenship.

America is already Great! Will be the greatest country in the world as it is right now.

Not gonna happen in my lifetime.
Really?

Senate Democrats are ramping up pressure against the Supreme Court just weeks before Election Day, introducing a bill that would expand the number of justices from nine to 15 over the course of 12 years.

Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR) on Thursday announced his latest legislation, which also seeks to implement stricter requirements on the Supreme Court for rulings that overturn laws and proposes mandatory audits of justices’ tax returns. Wyden’s proposal comes amid other Democratic-led legislative attempts to change the high court, including Vice President Kamala Harris‘s recent openness to break the filibuster, as the 2024 election draws nearer.

Dude, thats 2023 stuff. Its all hype and the examiner? Really. No journalism there

and yet the republicans hate immigrants.

No, Republicans love legal immigrants. We don't like illegal immigrants.

Why else would poor people in So. America want to risk their lives to get here and contribuite to the American way?

We may be better off than some South American countries, but that doesn't mean we are great per se, just better off. They are not coming here to contribute to the American way. You make it sound like they are hear to make things better for us and that is not the case at all. They are coming here on a get rich (comparatively speaking) pipe dream akin to people flocking to Hollywood to become stars and/or to exploit the American way for their own good and often times for their families back home in South America.

The companies that can't fill jobs are the ones that don't pay enough to raise a family in the US. Republican or Democrat doesn't matter, their campaigns are all funded by companies and trade groups. They want cheap labor, and I can understand that, some see that as good business. But it creates the problem where the people who are doing best are the ones who come here on work visas, or stay here illegally and send their money home to raise their families where they can afford it.

Imagine an American dad moving his family to Guatemala, living in a homeless camp here, working an 8-5 job, and sending all his money to his wife in Guatemala. That's essentially what you have to do to compete with immigrants here. But we're too "lazy" and "entitled" to do that.

At least for the jobs that Bush said Americans won't do. Americans will do any job, but they will demand safe working conditions and enough money to live on.

So which So American countries are we not better than? Really? Name them.

Those Haitians that were supposedly eating the cats and dogs are legal immigrants. It's disgusting the way one political party picks on immigrants calling them ALL murderers and rapists. We are all immigrants and yup, some aren't nice people. Thats just the way it's always been.

You said we had the world's greatest country. So we may be better than some South American countries, but we aren't the best country in the world for lots of reasons - cost of living, access to health care, education, etc. We are no longer the leader in manufacturing.

You do know that Haiti isn't in South America, right?

We are NOT all immigrants. You may be, but I am not. However, I believe by what you are trying to say that we are all immigrants if we reside outside the Omo Valley. Nobody uses that logic. One is not an immigrant to where they were born (except in cases such as where a person renounces citizenship and becomes a citizen of another country and then tries to move back to the country of birth as a foreign citizen).

You are right that it is sickening that one of our two major political parties, the Republicans, seem to consider all illegal immigrant to be murderers and rapists. That is part of what makes this not the greatest country in the world, LOL. We no longer have the open door policy to immigrants that we had during our first 100-150 years.

As for the unsubstantiated claims of dogs and cats being eaten by illegal immigrants (as claimed by both Vance and Trump), the claims were against illegal immigrants. Allexis Telia Ferrell was arrested for killing and possibly eating a cat. No indication she is an immigrant, but there is that she has mental health issues. She was born in Ohio. Her parents were from New York. Trump is fine with legal immigration.

I have no doubt Trump's claims are fueled by bigotry of convenience. After all, Melania Trump was an illegal immigrant herself at one time.

I'd agree about education, we are slacking greatly. India produces more engineers than we do, tons more. That country pays for education.
We have great access to healthcare if you want to excellent healthcare. Other countries have free healthcare but they can't get as good of healthcare as we have. You may go broke if you don't have insurance.

FWIW, got a couple emails from online ammo dealers. They claim that ammo orders have increased significantly this week. Don't know if it's legit or a sales gimmick. The local shops are well stocked and having sales.

Why would you go to school for engineering in the US? The company I worked for 1997-2015 sent every engineering job they could to Bangalore. Why pay $125K for an engineer here, when you can pay $12/hr. for an engineer in India?

Disney laid off a ton of software engineers 15-20 years ago, put up reqs for engineers at a ridiculously low wage, then lobbied the government for more H1B visas.
