Lets see them bubbas!

This Savage built No 4 Mk 1 Enfield is another pawn shop resue.

The bubba before me did a real number on the scope mount and bedding

At some point it looks like someone drilled it for a side mount scope, and then mounted this piece of 3/8" dovetail rail for 22 scope rings. It was all quite wiggly and the scope was much too high.

I redid the bedding and refinished the stock

The iron sights were pretty much useless though because they are too low for me to use. I was able to find a tall enough front sight blade and to also get the rear sight elevated enough so I can actually use them, but I wanted a scope on this one too so after some very tedious and careful filing I was able to make a decent set of rings to mount to the rail that came with it.

The rings and rail are expoxy bedded together and are actually quite solid and straight and it holds zero really well now. I also found a 3-9x32 scope that allows me to mount the scope at the correct height and clear the iron sights if I lower the rear sight.

Looks like you did a good job of saving that one. Hope you got it cheap.

I have no Bubba examples or photos of my shooting hobby; I do not have the attributes to Bubba anything - I leave the Bubba behavior to the Bubba culture.

I have only done two and they were much better than what I define as bubba jobs but I have no pictures of either. The first was a Krag that I put a sporter stock on for a friend back in the very early "70's. He traded me a pump action Remington in 300 Savage caliber to do the work and that was my son's first deer rifle. A few years later I found a '17 Enfield at our local pawn shop that had a new barrel for the princely sum of $36. A lot of reading showed the barrel replacement was done by Hi Standard. and the outside looked like it was very finely threaded. I cut the barrel to 24", crowned it, and with my lathe, files, and emery paper slicked up the outside of the barrel. That left things like straightening and shortening the bolt handle, straightening the floorplate, contouring the trigger guard, grinding off the rear sight ears to a Winchester 70 profile, rust bluing it and finally installing a Timney trigger. I farmed out spot annealing the receiver and drilling and tapping for scope bases to a friend because I did not have the right equipment then to do the drilling. Herter's provided a northern walnut semi-inletted stock. In those days semi-inletted meant a 1/2" groove cut in the fore end and an abundance of wood left to shape the stock. Northern walnut is a different color and much harder than the more temperate climate walnut too. Being the '70's white line spacers, ebony grip cap, and fore end tip were required. Instead of acra-glas I bedded it with JB Weld which I found easier to work with. I checkered it and finished it with Herter's Liege finish. This turned into a several months project but I had it ready for my wife to take hunting that fall.

Here's a real bubba job for you... The poor gun is a Savage 23C in 25-20. I have no idea what this idiot was thinking, but he did accomplish one thing: Lowering the value of the gun. I got it real cheap! ( $100 )

I'd be very happy to find one for $100, been wanting a 25-20 to mess with.

Are those filled screw holes?
Sure are! I think...well, I don't know what to think. I can't begin to visualize what that guy was trying to do. I can only speculate he was trying to mount a scope. Normally, I would never buy a gun where the receiver is full of plugged screw holes near where the left locking lug on the bolt rests. But the 25-20 isn't exactly a high pressure cartridge, either. The holes present no problems.

The gun has been an absolute joy! It is very accurate and , being a bolt gun fed from a box magazine, I can load spitzer pointed bullets. I have tried some 100 grain PSPs and they work quite well. Can't get away with that in my Remington model 25 because of it's tubular magazine.

Ya looks fun, really the only thing I can hunt with one is varmints since can't use it for small game here. I'd be tempted to pop a deer with one. There a nice one on GB right now up to $100 but like 12 days left, not sure what these bring anymore. I have that nice weaver x8 varmint scope I'd like to use. A 256 win mag would be great, just make brass from 357mag.

I had a mint rem 14 1/2 in 44-40 that I loved but the 2011 flood took that one.

Hornady used to make a 60gr. flat point soft nose bullet for the 25-20. I cant find them anymore but I once tried to see how far one would penetrate a treated lumber 4X4.

Completely through is how far. And an inch into the one behind it. I don't know how well the bullet expands in flesh, but it certainly seems to have enough penetration to do the job on a deer.

Not up to date on what 25. Bullets are avaliable but at worst could have noe make a nice fn or hp mold, 50-75 yards I'd have no problems taking a deer. Always wished someone made a small rifle in 25acp, would be funny showing other hunters what your using as they have the 300wm for 60lb yearnings lol.

Me too! Thought it'd make a dandy squirrel getter, especially in a little single shot.

Ya it would, something like a old bolt 22lr under 5lbs would be cool. Always wanted to see if a 22lr could be converted to center fire, the 25 is only about 1000 psi more then max psi 22lr. Unfortunately I don't think we can hunt squirrel here in NY with ceterfire.

Can't here in Arkansas either unless it's rifle season. My thought was a Stevens favorite in 25rf converted to center fire. Bet it wouldn't take much; the hang up would be setting the barrel back and rechambering it. I haven't figured out extraction yet either.

I can never seem to find a favorite project gun cheap, been looking for years to. Not sure if anyone makes a 25 sleeve but I could always get a cheap green mountain barrel and fit or turn down to make a sleeve. Always wanted a 256wm since it's so easy and cheap to make.

If that's a Bubba...then it's a very tastefully done job.
I don't know if the importer did the work or if an individual did it. And yes they did do a good job. Too many time you see people butcher the front sights or barrel and this one has the original barrel length and original front sight. The rifle has taken its share of deer over the years.

My 1903 “Sporters”, top two are still .30-06 the bottom has been rebarreled to .243. One is a Springfield Armory, the others are Remingtons.

My first was this Smith Corona 03-A3, .30-06

I did not do the work on these but bought them as is over the last 35 years.

I also have two Lee Enfield No 4 Mk 1s. One is restocked and IMO looks pretty good. The other, a U.S. Property marked Savage, not so good… I’ll have to dig them out for pics.
