As if the world isn’t experiencing enough senseless violence, we are once again seeing a spate of school shootings in the United States. Every single one of these shooters was mentally deranged or a social misfit who believed the only solution to his problem was to take innocent hostages and kill or abuse them.

In every case, from Colorado to Pennsylvania, the shooters were armed to the teeth. They had no other combat skills. It was only their guns that allowed them to carry out their perverted plans. This reveals a basic truth: The people who think they need guns to solve their social problems are precisely the people who shouldn’t have them.

Most people don’t own guns and manage to live their lives without ever putting themselves in a position where they have to shoot their way out.

It’s only the nut cases who think they need guns, and then find ways to use them.

Yet still the National Rifle Association claims it’s just criminals who misuse guns, and we should just enforce the existing laws. That is a totally hollow argument. You can’t arrest somebody until after he commits the crime and victims are already dead. The law doesn’t stop him. The only way to stop him is not to allow him to have guns in the first place. This is the reason most other civilized countries have strict gun-control laws. Humans just aren’t capable of using guns responsibly. The power it gives them is too great.

Hunting season is about to start. On the first day of hunting season, a child will be shot by another hunter somewhere in Ohio. It happens every year. When will we ever learn?

So we should preemptively punish them? Minority Report style? And we should disarm an entire nation of people of their God-given Rights simply because bad things can happen when those Rights are abused?

And who needs deer hunting.......there's all those tasty veggies to choose from! :p
 
Put him in prison where guns aren't allowed. He should be all safe and sound with a total gun ban there behind bars right?

Don't you see the glaring flaws in this guys logic? Yea, these murderers were mentally unsound and probably sociopathic, and thus a criminal after the fact. He certainly wasn't a law abiding citizen.
 
I too am convinced.

Not only am I handing in my guns before they commit a crime, I'm going to move to a civilized country that bans guns.

Let's see, do they have time share in Sudan, or Somalia?

Can someone recommend a good psychiatrist for me ? I've been shooting for 50 years and haven't shot any one yet .Thre's obviously something wrong with me !
 
This is another loony "Letter to the Editor". Do you folks who read the newspapers that print these letters ever write a letter in reponse or do you just whine on this site?

Get the information about highway deaths for your state, drunk driving, others and particularly children killed. Write to your newspaper saying something like:

PHIL MUSSER. from Upper Arlington thinks we have a problem in this state with children's deaths caused by firearms. Is he aware that xxxx people died in traffic accidents on the roads in this state, including xxxx children, so far in 2006. If Mr. Musser is really interested in saving children's lives, as opposed to promoting his agenda to ban firearms by cynically using the deaths of our poor children as a tool, he should transfer his attentions to drunk driving and highway safety.

Substitute "country" for "state" as appropriate.

Yeah, that 20 year old college girl who gets raped on her way from the library to the dorm should know better than to put herself in that position.

And the police officer who tries to stop an armed thug; he should know better too.

And the father of two who is asleep in his bed in upper middle class suburbia when a pair of violent home invaders break down his locked door and murder his family. What was he thinking putting his family in such peril.

What a sanctimonious ignoramus to figure that people who find they need to defend themselves have somehow managed to "put themselves in that position."

I guess that the 1-2 million people the Lott-Mustard study say defend themselves yearly with firearms must have somehow managed to cause themselves to be there....shame on them for becoming an irritant to the criminal class.:barf:
 
Phil Musser needs a history lesson focusing on the genocides of the twentieth century, from the Turkish slaughter of Armenians through the Nazi slaughter of Jews, and on to the Communist gulags and killing fields, right up to today's would be genocide leaders in Iran, al queda, North Korea, Venezuela, etc. In every case, populations were first disarmed by 'gun contol', for their own good of course.

Put Phil in a time machine back to the Warsaw Ghetto so he could tell the beleagered Jews to drop their weapons since they are incapable of using them responsibly.

Actually, the basic truth revealed is that most people in this country are sheep, and view a gun as having magical powers, which it doesn't.

We have also been brainwashed with the cunning strategy of "give them what they want and they'll go away."

In my time as a commercial truck driver, I have come to realize that many humans just aren't capable of using vehicles responsibly either, and the power drivers licenses give them is too great. Don't see anyone calling for a ban on vehicles.

Let's review this editorial:

poor logic, or total lack thereof: check
distorted views, inconsistent with reality: check
dragging the NRA into it for no apparent reason: check
comparing the USA to non-democratic countries: check
offering no solution to the problem: check

Thank God intelligent people don't take people like Mr. Musser seriously. I hardly think he is qualified to speak on what our species is capable or not capable of doing. A quick search reveals that he is a lawyer, what are the odds... maybe give him a call and ask him if he has a point, because he sure left it out of his editorial.

hmmm.... I would think that newpapers get some "pro-gun" letters, so maybe they just decide "we aren't gonna print this..."
 
He might be right. Perhaps humans aren't up to it. There's evidence to support that idea. When firearms were introduced to the Maori in New Zealand, they were almost entirely wiped out.

But firearms are here. Technology can't be undone. Some humans are going to own firearms. Those humans might be government employees, criminals, ordinary citizens, or some combination of the above. No government that I am aware of has ever voluntarily disarmed itself. Criminals always seem to get access to guns. So...

followed by 3 anti gun lettrs.

In response to Phil Musser's editorial Sunday, October 15th.
Ban all guns? Cars cause more deaths, let's ban them, except for government use, of course. Cigarettes cause cancer death. Let's ban them, people are responsible enough to not smoke. Athletes occasionally fall over dead, let's ban sports too.
I have a better idea, let's just ban all crime and bad happenings, then people will live in peace and harmony. Guns won't do harm, cars won't cause death, and people, of course won't smoke, and athletes won't die.
