Subject: Schools Try New Tactics on Guns - CORRECTED

I just dispatched the following to the "Trib." Two corrections plus a
    bold new ending.

    ------------------------------------------------

The Salt Lake City School Board's decision to post hex signs in the
belief that red octagons will keep the children for whom they are
responsible safe from gunfire highlights the current state of ignorance
    among today's academic leaders.

When faced with terrorist assaults on their schools, the Israelis armed
the teachers. The result was no more attacks on Israeli schools.

American schools in Littleton, CO, Springville, OR and Perl, MS, among
others, have already experienced terrorist attacks in the form of
schoolmate shootings. In each case, an armed teacher or citizen may have
prevented the killings altogether. (In Perl, MS, an armed vice-principal
did bring the slaughter to a halt.)

But the SLC School Board has decided that a sign will prevent bloodshed.
Maybe all the Israelis need to do is to post "No Bomb" signs on their
borders. Instant peace! Call the White House!

Wouldn't it be wonderful if life was as simple as SLC School Board?
Perhaps it would be better if they focused their collective concerns on
making sure their students can read such signs.

They could also post signs on the doors of all airplanes "No Hijacking Allowed"

Consice, has a good flow, and rather biting tone.

Looks like a good candidate to be printed to me.

Excellent letter. For future reference, that sentence needs a tweak:

Wouldn't it be wonderful if life were as simple as SLC School Board?

With a hypothetical, use were rather than was. "Was" is past tense.

    "If it's IF, it's WERE."

Grammar aside, Salt Lake is drifting left at an alarming rate. Glad you wrote the letter.
