I am trying to mount a Weaver K-4 scope onto a Weaver style base using Leupold PRW rings. The bottom rings fit right onto the rail and the scope sits in the bottom rings okay. However, when I try to put the upper half of the rings on, they won't fit over the scope. What am I doing wrong? Are they supposed to "snap" over the scope (sounds like it would harm the scope).

    I think you mean QRW

    Prof,
If you are talking about Leupold QRW rings, the top half "snaps" over the scope tube. Put a little lube on the tube before you do this and it should scratch anything.

Great Rings......I am using several sets on various rifles now.

Thanks, Will. The PRW are the new version of the QRW. However, they are non-detachable: i.e.- they don't have the adjustable lever which allow the rings to be taken off and returned to zero. These attach to bases that are, themselves, detachable. I looked at the pictures on Leupold's website and the two rings both look alike in that the top half is "longer" than the bottom half. So, I think your advice about using the lube and "snapping" them onto the scope is probably good for these rings as well. Thanks again!

    Yes---they snap on.

You can flex them open a bit with your fingers to get them to slide on a little easier.

The PRW rings are just the non-detachable(cheaper) version of the QRW rings.

As you noticed, the upper 'halves' extend past 180° to connect to the lower rings, slightly encircling the scope. For fear of marring the scope, I've always ground a slight bevel on the inside corner of the upper rings so that so that they clear the scope with no (or very little) need of being spread for installation.

A few other scope ring manufacturers also have similar lines where one 'half' of the ring encompasses the scope more than 180°. Some, like Badger, mill out the obstructing corner of the ring. This is basically what I'm doing when I bevel the edges.

What is the (perceived?) advantage of the "more than 180º" ring top?
