Lever Lovers

My first was a savage 99 in 308, my second a Marlin 39A in 22 caliber then my tastes in cartridges grew into a 35 caliber love affair so my 3rd is Browning BLR in 358 win and my newest a Marlin 336 in 35 rem. The BLR and 336 are both freshly sighted in for this years deer season as the savage 99 made venison last year. Need to get the 39A out and reduce the squirrel population before deer season too.

Bought this one new from local hardware store with money I earned hauling hay in 6th grade. Bought the scope the next summer with money from working on a dairy farm. They haven't been apart since , been putting deer in the freezer since 1984 and still shoots like new.

I had an offset mount for mine but my Son in Law borrowed the rifle and he took it off. I have no idea where it went but I liked it.

This is my most recent lever purchase. A micro groove Marlin Mod .444. It was literally a "basket case", as in it all came in pieces and parts. I had to first FIND parts for it and then retro fit a fore stock to replace the broken one which came with it. Along with that it was missing the magazine tube, spring, cap etc...not an easy find. Took me about three years to find and fit everything. I had an old Weaver 3x scope which I think fits perfectly with it. Doesn't look perfectly stock but it shoots very nicely with 265gr Hornady FTX's I loaded for it.

The Savage 99s. There are many in my Family, Passed down. My favorite is my 375 Win.

Then the Marlins, old Jm only thank you. From 22lr to 357 up to 44 and 45 colts. I had the 45-70s guide and xlrs.

I prefer the Trapper short barrel ones… Just plain old cool.

I still have people tell me you can't use top mounts on a 94 Ae. It's true that with low rise mounts, unfired rounds can sometimes glance off the scope during ejection, but with those see through mounts, I've never had a problem.

Love levers. My fav is a Marlin 1894CL in 32-20. I also have a 336 30-30, a 1964 edition of the Marlin 39A, and an original Winchester 1873 from the 1880's. A couple that I didn't like that went away were a Win 1894 357 mag, and a Savage 99 in 300 Savage. A couple I wish I had are a Marlin 62 Levermatic and a Browning 81 BLR. The Marlin 62 is getting impossible to find AND expensive. That is a bad combo. The Browning is just priced higher than I want this present point in time.

I have a Marlin 1895 45/70, open sights, it has accounted for quite a few deer in the thick woods.

Thats an interesting stock. I've never seen one with a cheek riser like that. Do you know if its original?

I have only owned two levers but I would like to add a few more. I would like to get a 9422 or a BL22 to plink with and I also passed on a JM marlin 35 remington at a gun show which I have regretted ever since, and I would like to get an 1892 someday.

When I was 16 I wanted to buy myself a deer rifle with my first job. I very nearly let impulse get the best of me as the local sporting goods store had a Marlin guide gun and I drooled over it. The ammo was pretty shockingly expensive at the time though so good sense prevailed and I got a Tikka T3 in 25-06 which was a lot more useful than the guide gun would have been. Some number of years later when I was in better finances someone posted a link here to a site that had them on sale and marlin had a mail in rebate going so I finally scratched that itch and got one. This one had to take a couple rides back to Remington to fix the sights that were crooked, but once that was fixed it was a great shooter and I was only like $300 into it with the mail in rebate.



I was very fond of that rifle until one day it came to my attention that Marlin was making a new version called the CBA that had an octagon barrel, 6 round tube, and uncheckered stock. I fell in love and immediately posted the guide gun for sale to put the money towards one. Well I sold the guide gun but the money ended up going toward race car parts and I put it on the back burner for awhile. Last summer when I heard that Marlin had shuttered production I decided that now was the time so I searched one out and bought it. I payed through the nose for it, a couple hundred over list price in fact, but its what I wanted and I didn't want to chance it if nobody ever made them again. I looked today on gunbroker and there is one with a $1500 starting bid so that makes me feel a little better about what I paid for it! I'm sure in 50 years I won't remember what it cost.

It is original. It was a limited edition with a medallion inlayed into the stock....

I only have one lever gun, a Rossi Model 92 in .45 Colt. It has the short 16" barrel and the large loop lever. It's light, handy to have around, and quicker than all get out to put it on target! Would like to get another one just like it someday but in .357 Magnum.

Speaking of 39A's....The bottom, more well used one was my first firearm. My father traded a S&W .38special to a farmer for it back in about 1972 when I was only 6. It's what I learned to shoot with and what I taught all my kids to shoot with as well. I decided that for my grandson I'd find his own. I bought the top one from a friend of mine who's father passed away and left it behind. He had no interest in it so basically "gave" it to me for doing some gunsmithing. IIRC it's a 1962 model which he said he'd never seen shot. By the looks of it, I'd say it has VERY few rounds through it. The golden trigger is still bright and has very little wear as well as the bluing being virtually flawless. Next summer I will be taking my grandson out with it...he'll also be 6/7 and is showing more and more responsibility every day.

Almost all of my rifles are lever action rifles.
Two .22 LR

.357 Magnum
Two .44 Magnums
.45-70
All of my lever actions are from Henry Repeating Arms
Also have several Ruger Single actions in these calibers, except .45-70 (have no plans to go there).

My favorite rifle is a Marlin 336 in 35 Rem. Made shortly after they started putting in the cross bolt safety, it is my smoothest and most accurate rifle.
