I have been shooting handloads in my jc penny marlin 30-30, for years with never a sign of over pressure. recently i bought a winchester 94, 1950's model and shot the tried and true handloads from the winchester. Talk about signs of over pressure. pierced primer, stuck case, case seperation. i switcthed to remington 170gr. factory loads. i am not seeing any signs of over pressure. i have read to work up max loads when switching rifles, but always thought that was meant for more careful types.

Had the same experience with Marlin/Winchester in 32 Winchester Special chambering. I had developed the load for the Marlin 336A and then got a super good deal on a Winchester 94 in same chambering. Had to back off 1.5 grains in order to use the 94. In '64 Winchester modified the locking bars on the 94 bolt to make it a little stronger, maybe that was the difference. Mine are both 1949 birth children. I have a late model 94 in 32WS that will handle the Marlin proofed loads just fine.
