I've got a Maverick 88 and was thinking about putting a light on her for HD/Camping (think dangerous animals), and realized I wasn't sure where to mount the light. As I understand it, I can either mount the light to the barrel/magazine tube using a clamp such as the Elzetta ZSM, mount it directly on the forend using a rail like on the ATI StrikeForce forend (which currently sits on my 88), or use a forend integrated light system such as the TL-RACKER® SHOTGUN FOREND LIGHT.

I'm not too keen on a forend integrated light system, so that leaves me with either the barrel/mag tube clamp or attaching one to the forend.

Where/how do you guys mounts your lights? (offset above the barrel, offset under the barrel, between the barrel and the mag tube, under the barrel centered, left side or right side)(Clamp or Forend)
Why do you mount your light where you do?

My 870 has the magazine moun with a pictany rail for the light. My H&R pardner has the same thing, and my JTS (China) semi auto has the pictany mounted to the handguard and then a light. All of them are below the barrel/magazine tube. I have shot each one in quick sucession and noticed that when its on the side, it was prone to rotating a slight bit during recoil. mounted them below and no issues. the weight does help with muzzle rise a bit also.

Here's the JTS Semi auto setup. the front grip is an all aluminum and is foldable.

My Maverick 88 has a clamp on rail on the magazine tube, just in front of where the pump sits when it is forward. The clamp adds three rail sections at the 3, 6, and 9 o clock positions. I have the light with a tail button right where my support hand thumb can turn it on.

Surefire integrated system. Well made and self contained, doesn't increase the profile of the weapon making it fatter.

I had to get inventive a little when I wanted to mount a light to my 410 Mossberg Shockwave. No one makes light mounts for the smaller Mossberg 410's.

    Duct tape…the handyman’s secret weapon!

Kidding…sort of. I had a buddy who duct taped a 4 cell mag lite to his 870 back in the late 90’s for coon hunting.

You may have to wait until they are in stock, but I like the RS Regulate mount.

I tried flashlight on the pump but found the light then had to endure the recoil and the shock of the pump and return. With the magazine mounted flashlight the light only endures the recoil.

Also, Malkoff Design flashlights with their rubber bumpers are great for shotguns.

I don't think this was the brand I ordered but I used something basically identical to this. It's a pretty ingenious concept. I added a little loctite to the mounting screws and it's been solid with a Streamlight TLR-1 HL mounted to it, preceded by an Olight M21SX Javelot for awhile.
