Lipsey's S&W 629 Mountain Gun

How does the new mountain guns compare to the old? I am NOT asking about the cliche finish, MIM, and hand fitted old vs new debate. I'm asking about as far as robustness and design features proprietary to the S&W mountain guns.

It’s a 629 with a couple special features. It’s going to be just as robust as any other 629. The main features are the removal of the lock, the lightweight barrel profile and the nice custom grips.

Took it to the range today and sent a few hundred 44spl and 44magnum rounds down range. It's a dream in single action and a bit of a long tough pull in double action. It's very light, yet manageable shooting either special or magnums through it. The bear hug grips are large and contoured making it a pleasure to shoot. No cylinder or other ammunition issues. I don't have an early mountain gun with which to compare. That said, it's a solid accurate shooter. Put a Performance Center trigger and a full underlug on it and it might be the perfect revolver.

I was under the impression that S&W "Mountain" Guns were bulked in certain areas or something. I guess they just have thinner lighter barrels? The Mountain Gun is 39oz and the standard 629 is 42.8 oz. I thought there was a bigger difference and reason why the Mountain Guns were popular.

The front of the cylinders were rounded on the Original Mountain Revolver of 1989. I have one and it is superb . Every bit as good as the pinned and recessed 629 no dash 6" I gave to my son.
I have gotten rid of all my post P&R S&W, except the Mountain Revolver and a late 90s model .45 Colt 4" model 25 with no lock.It is nicely polished Blued, no laser markings and real rifling with a nice da and sa trigger.I has proper throat dimensions and longer cylinder than the earlier model 25 .45C had.

The 629 Mountain gun is a very nicely done revolver. I have shot mine only with .44 Specials so far and really like it.

Also, I think a 5 inch, skinny barrel 629 Mountain Gun would be a terrific woods gun.
