Liver anybody?

Very interesting article on the polar bears and vitamin A. Never heard of that before.

last night I wrapped some chicken livers in bacon stuck toothpicks though them deep fried in lard I’ve done the same with turkey ,deer, bear, beef, pig.I have always felt wild liver was the best.
I also cook the heart and slice it for sandwiches depending on how shot it was.

I'll eat deer liver once a year if it's fried with plenty of onions. But I mostly just eat it to join in with the rest of the family - they love it. Mom and Dad acted like it was the best meat on the planet, and as strange as this may sound, my wife, my two daughters and 2 of my 3 grandsons make gluttons of themselves whenever one of us has a fresh deer liver. My wife even says, "It's better the next day when it's cold." She love's cold deer liver sandwiches. Yuck!

The liver can stay in the gut bucket. I actually tried it for the first time this year and didn't like it at all. However I'm not a fan of liver in general.

Now the heart, I'll eat that all day long. It's a sin to live that in the gut bucket.

I've had liver maybe a dozen times in my life and only liked it once. I don't know what "they" did to us poor recruits while learning the finer points of shooting an M-16 at Camp Pendleton but liver was served there one evening and it was great! I tried it once after that thinking I would like it but no way. Although I can't stand the smell of it cooking, last week I thought about trying it again while dressing a rabbit. I thought maybe cooking it outside with bacon and jalapenos might be worth a try. Maybe later this year....

Heavens yes I like liver. Deer liver was about a once or twice a year treat. Growing up around cows, calf's liver was eaten with some frequency. Doesn't take much, just a frying pan and some onions.

And the ability to overcome a really strong gag reflex. Yuk.....! :(

Nothing better than deer heart and liver. I would rather leave the backstraps than them.

I agree with your wife. Love it cold.

When I was just a young pup I had a big fish trap. A chunk of Antelope liver could attract the big cat fish on the lower Platte river. Not saying I ever used that illegal devise.:uhoh:

Any kind of luck, I might get myself one more good pan full of liver before our deer season ends. I should get time to hunt the last weekend of muzzleloader season next week. I have a .58 loaded and propped in a corner and just need to connect with a doe.

It seems like people either love liver or hate it. The same with mushrooms. I love both.
Or they refuse to even try it,I love beef liver, and like chicken livers, but I can't stand pork liver, but I have at least tried it before I decided if I liked it,or not...My Dad always ate sandwichs from Braunsweiger (he called it livercheese).I didn't care for it as a kid,but I every great once in a while I get the taste for it,and pick up a roll..

Striated skeletal muscle tissue only.
No internal organs, ever.

Grandma had a farm, cattle, pigs and chickens.
Think internals mostly went bye bye with other folks.
Liver might have been cooked once in a blue moon.

I grew up eating just about every part of a cow or bull has to offer, mountain oysters, tongue ,tripe, liver and so forth, so deer liver is not any different to me.
AMEN, Bro!!!!!!!!!, deer liver: cut out the gall bladder, wash thoroughly , slice in 1/4 to 3/8th in. slices, wash again' soak over night in milk to remove ALL blood, next day wash again in cold water, bread w/ flour, salt & black pepper, enjoy for the best liver you ever ate!!!!!!

I leave it with the guts. I'm amazed at how much I learn on this site. I am not wild about liver but I do eat it occasionally. I spent two months in the Philippines this summer. You need to be open minded to eat there!!!! I do like boudin but when I made my own I use chicken liver instead of pork & boil separate & dump the water. Even Flintnapper might like it!! Haha. All the liver hatters have a new excuse "Don't you know liver can kill you " .

I would rather walk across broken glass (twice) and have my skin peeled off in small strips..... than eat Liver!

I had just about gotten the 'mental picture' of Liver out of my mind, when up pops this thread again.

Ever the glutton for punishment, I just had to read it. My own fault I suppose.

Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha!
Sounds like me and fish. On our first date, my wife talked me into ordering frog legs in a fancy restaurant. "They're sort of like chicken." she said.
Yeah - like chicken alright! Tough, stringy, FISH FLAVORED, rooster chicken! Besides that, they were danged expensive!
I married her anyway. That was in 1971. But we have an agreement - she doesn't fix anything that even resembles fish for dinner, and I take her out for breakfast almost every Saturday morning.

I'm getting nauseous just reading about it.

It smells awful, looks awful, tastes awful.

It's a 'filter' for the body. Yuk!

If you have to 'Soak it', 'Cover with Bacon or Onions'...etc to make it palatable, that's all you need to know.

Leave it in the field for the scavengers.

I was going to make some breakfast...but I'm not hungry now.

Hey Flint!
Why don't you tell us how you really feel? :) That was/is so funny.

Gotta agree with Ole Joe, no sense beating around the bush Flint! I hunted long ago with a fellow that when gutting a deer, would slice off a piece of kidney and eat it raw....now there is where I would draw the line!

One of the best wild game meals I've ever had was whitetail liver. Didn't find elk liver to be as good. Lots of organs are very nutritious, the muscle meat is actually the least nutritious part of an animal.

Lake trout and whitefish livers are also good.

Soak it in milk over night. Then use garlic, onions and a couple of bay leaves.
Alternative I like a bit of paprika and vinegar and reduce it a little.
Salt obviously and only cook with olive oil.
