I have seen countless SASS organizations and Civil War groups that do live fire competitions and shooting events in full costume. But does anyone know if there are similar groups in Southern California that are dedicated to shooting WWII firearms?

I shoot somewhat regularly at San Gabriel Valley Gun Club and sometimes see various types of re-enactors. Once, I saw quite a few Korean War vets shooting their milsurps while in full uniform (it's pretty cool when a vet unloads a magazine from his M1 carbine  ). There were also several guys way too young to be vets - and they were dressed up in uniform as well. Dunno the details of their organization, and I know that the Korean War is a different war than WWII ;) , but maybe the next time you are shooting at SGVGC, you can ask one of the employees about it; I'm sure someone knows something about it.

BTW, last time I was there I saw a Civil War re-enactor in full costume shooting a period-type rifle. After a while he busted out a 1903 Springfield :what: . It looked kinda funny, a guy in Union Blue shooting a WWI rifle!

I have seen guys up at San Gabriel shooting in uniform and I have chatted with fellows who shoot older militaria at monthly gatherings but I don't think they were part of a set organization.

Let me propose this. Are there any people here who are interested in trying something like this? We could try it out informally to begin with. Just meet at a range somewhere. Anyone interested in wearing a battle uniform of a 20th century conflict (let's say WWI through Korea) and shooting the arms appropriate to their chosen period and nation could come out and have a little fun. Maybe we could even have a friendly competition. Divide each conflict into classes. WWI shoots against WWI. WWII shoots against WWII. With enough shooters and toys we could even try making different weapon classes. There could be a WWII rifle class, a WWII pistol class. We could have guys in Soviet Uniforms with Mosin Nagants competing against guys shooting M1s and wearing US Army wool.

And to make it interesting the winners of each class shoot against each other in disqualification round.

Anyone see some appeal in this? Sound off or just IM me if you're interested.

I could show up I suppose but I'm not wearing a costume! A few problems though. I rarely get to shoot rifles and I'm primarily a collector and a handgun collector at that so my rifle skills went down the toilet. I'm trying not to buy any more rifles either due to already running out of room in two safes.

SGVGC is very likely closing down too so another ange might need to be found. Also many milsurp calibers come with ammo that has steel in the jacket and/or core so it can not be used at SGVGC and I do not reload.

MY WW2 bolt action collection has been growing though, recently added a 7.7 Arisaka and found ammo for my Greek Mannlicher Schoenauer 1903/14 but the cost of shooting much ammo out of these or my 6.5 Carcano M38SR is prohibitive.

Thanks for your response, Moonclip. But wearing a uniform would be point of the event: Shooting period firearms while wearing period clothing and uniforms, just like the SASS guys do for 1860's and Civil War. We would do the same for WWI, II, and Korea. Otherwise it's just another bunch of people shooting old guns.
