I stumbled upon this video on youtube and thought twice before deciding to post this. Some guy was having his 30-06 wound cleaned out, seems he shot himself by mistake after tripping over the cat. I am posting this for cautionary purposes only e.g. don't walk around the house with a loaded anything unless it is properly secured in a holster or unloaded as in a rifle. No sure what to say except how the heck do you fall on a rifle, pull the trigger and shoot yourself in the stomach and have the bullet come out your hip. Sounds a bit like those stories that doctors tell about men "falling" on oblong objects.
 
I feel nothing but sympathy for the victim, but do you realize how many dumb things had to be happening almost simultaneously for that accident to happen? Loaded gun, round chambered, safety off, finger, toe, something on the trigger, muzzle pointed in an unfortunate direction, cat in the house. I just can't wrap my head around how it could have happened. Bad karma I guess. I lugged an M1 over half of Korea in the ice and snow. Probably fell with that thing in hand a hundred times as did thousands of others. Never heard of one going off without the safety being off and a finger being on the trigger. Of course, I never fell over a cat.

AND,if that was a contact wound - I expect MUCH more damage internally.

I have a cat [ wife's ] and she has never caused be to have a ND,AD or anything close.

I blame it on the dummy with the loaded rifle ,AND walking around the house ?.
 
as you can see, a 30-06 round is a poor performer. He's lucky he wasn't shot with a 45acp, that would've killed him right there. :rolleyes:
 
I have been living for years with a gun shot wound & a knife wound, what is the big deal..........
 
The strange thing was they all had kinks in their tails.....some had multiple kinks.

Heavy metal hinged garbage lids falling on a tail will do it. The Asians I knew much prefered dogs, more meat.

According to the guy it was a FMJ. Still, if it had gone withing an inch in any direction I don't think he would have put out this video but his relatives may have filmed the Wake.
 
I have seen another YouTube video with some other guy that shot himself with his 1911 .45 ACP in the leg while he was at his reloading bench. If I remember correctly it was a FMJ round that went thru his thigh and thru his calf. Makes you think twice about having a gun anywhere around a reloading bench or cleaning bench! As for getting shot, some people live their entire lives with those injuries with very little problem, other are not so lucky. Some people if hit in bad area can have problems all of their life, and or suffer later due to complications possibly death even years after the injury depending on the circumstances. (Not every gunshot wound is the same for everyone, but I think that goes without saying.) ---I only hope he has a smooth recovery, as for the cat... I don't know I have never tripped over one and shot myself, but something would tell me he would no longer be an inside cat at the very least! :D
 
I still have a .223 lodged in my spine from 1980 at least thats what it looks like on x ray. So yeah I can concur that it still gives me fits on occasion but most of the time im otay.
As for eating dogs and cats depends on how hungry one may be most folks that say no just aint been truely hungry yet nationality has nothing to do with it. Sorry rant over.

The gun being loaded and the guy walking aren't safety violations even when you combine the two.

The M1 Garand is a pretty long rifle to be carrying such that you accidently shoot yourself in the gut. Gotta agree with 9teeneleven that something ain't right about the story.

You can't fix stupid.

I have to worry too. Shooting another person unintentionally (we'll leave the accident/negligent semantics for another thread) with a rifle isn't all that difficult. Shooting yourself unintentionally anywhere but the foot/lower leg with anything over a 25" barrel is incredibly difficult.

Overall though - I'm all for eliminating the cat, not the gun, from the situation. I've never understood the logistics of indoor pets myself anyways. We spent thousands of years getting to this point where we have walls specifically to keep animals OUTSIDE. Why would I ever intentionally let one inside?

Well, because we didn't get to the point of having walls to specifically keep animals out. Shelter and walls was for protection from the eliments in general and threats, keeping safe what we deem valuable, including our pets, food, family, etc.
 
Sorry MG but I'd rather have the cat in the house than most people I've met and the dogs are part of the arsenal. Walls are to keep two legged animals separate from those we hold dear. As for the material stuff that's why I'm well insured.

Good thing it was an fmj, I've seen a calf of a leg blown clean off by soft point .30-30 round from slightly longer distance away.
 
I couldn't take more than 10 seconds of it. That's disgusting. He's going to be collecting lint in two places now.

i can imagine him moving forward with the rifle in his hands and tripping on the cat...
his hand fly forward tossing the rifle ahead of himself and the muzzle pivots on the ground.
as he is collapsing face forward the gun has rotated and the muzzle is now around where the bullet enters him cause some part of his anatomy or clothing ( again--Murphy)
actuates the trigger.
 
I have 5 cats in the house and I haven't shot myself yet...................doubt if I ever will....chris3
 
ok the only way i can see this happening is if the guy was holding the M1 by the barrel. Trips butt end falls away from his body and he lets go putting the barrel into his gut while still falling and the weapon goes off? Whats the over all length of a M1 im about to go grab a piece of wood to see if this is actually plausable.
 
Don't know why, but I just got a mental song started in my head with the title of this thread to "Living in America" by James Brown.................................
 
It's quite amazing the kind of stupidity some people can live through.

I'm betting this was not really an 'accident' though... I'll wager he owed someone money.:rolleyes:
