Look up the data on www.hodgdon.com where they use the Hornady JFP made for that caliber. They list several powders to choose from, and I would keep the loads at starting level in your older rifle.

Lyman #49 reloading manual has data for 170 grain Hornady FP.
Which is the bullet weight your sights will best adjust too.
Also Hodgdon website has some too.
Winchester was up to their armpits making M1 Garand's & M1 Carbines for WWII in 1944.
Making .32 Special 1894's was probably not way up on the list of things to get done that year.

I use a 170 Winchester or Speer Flat Point in front of 36.0 of Winchester748 in mine, I think it is real close to Winchester factory load spec's. Please double check your load manual before using mine or anyone else's data. If the rifle is new to you give the bore a good scrub before you shoot it, it could be leaded as there was a lot of cast lead ammo available back then, it could very well be leaded up badly and cause you some over pressure problems. Better safe than sorry. This load should shoot to POI also.
Looked at the dates in The Winchester Book. Per Madis, there are little or no records kept during WWII. However, Madis reported that 1,290,000 to 1,4600,000 were the serial numbers made during the war. Mine is 1,450,XXX and falls right in there. Per the owner, his dad bought it during the war in 1944. The upper tang has no markings, but has never been touched and looks just as worn as the rest of the gun. Might have been a war time cutback to not mark it. It really is a nice weapon. Per Madis, from 43 to 48, there are no records. Go figure.

What powder do you have available? That might be the most restrictive of this question. I will assume you have some 170 flat points? Let me know what powder you have and I will try to get you some data.....

When I started loading for my 32 SPL I had a decided lack of good data in some weights. BUT there is a lot of data for the 30-30 in lots of bullet weights. The case volume is almost identical and for the same weight bullet the data was almost the same with both in the data from Lyman and Hodgdon IIRC. So I used the 30-30 data starting loads where I had no 32 SPL data and worked up loads to good accuracy in mine. I used 3031 because I had it on hand at the time and found that the best with all bullet weights. I will have to find my data for you.

30.0 grains of H322 would be a good starting load with a 170gr JFP.
