Local AK pricing, purchase options

I finally decided to pick up a x39 AK and went down to my local shop today to see what they had. Normally this shop is good, and at it's beginning it was great. I loved the ownership and the owners were generally the ones behind the counter. The last few months I've seen some prices that made me cringe and heard a lot of upsetting comments and sales pitches from behind the counter (not the owners working).

To the point, I am on a tight budget and was going to pick up a WASR. Usually they've only got a couple but they had several this time. Two 'new' (not previously owned on this side of the pond) and one used. The used was going for $325 with the 'new' at $399. Have I been away from the shop for too long or is that some insane pricing?

As I was glancing at the rifles, they wouldn't shut up about how the sky is falling due to possible changes in our gov't come election time.

Am I stuck at that pricing for a WASR these days? If I order one from somewhere, I will still be paying another $50 between FFL and shipping. Centerfire systems is not far from here (Lexington, Kentucky), and I hear an individual can stop there to buy.

At this point I'm considering either Centerfire or just saving a little longer and ordering a Vector Poly Classic or something.

Thoughts? Haha, or leads on local buys/shops that don't try to 'sell' you?


PS- They happened to have two 5.56 Arsenal SLR-106's that were just lovely. I really enjoyed handling the 103 style folder. $850...

They arent too far off, thats decent for in person prices. You can get anything cheaper online though.

i went to knob creek gun show last month and a mak 90 was goin for $480 thats high good guns but man i paid 200 for mine few years ago. centerfire a good bunch to deal with Antique And Modern Firearms in lexington fair bunch to deal with they where about 5 years ago that is not been there in a long time

Aim has some right now for a tick under $300. These are what I'm looking at right now. No clue how they rate versus other low price AKs, but personally I'm just looking for a nice starter that I can work over Hope this helps

Sounds fair for in store price. Online deals look good but unless your local dealer is a total crook buying online cost around the same by the time you add shipping, and transfer fees. Also buying in store you dont have to wait 3-4 weeks. Alas the days of $250 AK's are at the end. I havent seen one selling in person for under $350 lately even part sets sell at $200, add reciever and no advantage to buying a kit over one already assembled.

If you wanted a "better" rifle than the WASR, you could build your own.

Have they got a Dunham's nearby your place? They often have double-stack WASRs for three bills.

At a local gunshow last month a vendor had Century Yugo AKs with a fixed stock for 439.00. Much nicer finish-wise than the WASRs.

Noresttill, nice looking rifle. What kind of tools did you have to buy/fabricate to put it together? I have a copes kit in stock for a future build. Really nice kit, still had the "straw" in the barrel.

At the houston gun shows, the price for a new is about 325. to 350, without tax.

And it's only going up due to good old supply & demand, China shouldn't have sold those WMD making materials to Iran. If Norinco could import to the USA WalMart would be selling MAK's and M14's.

MGKelly I bought a GP WASR 10/63 from Dunhams in April on sale for $235 OTD. It had a single stack 10rd mag which I converted to a doublestack with a dremel and a couple of cut-off wheels and a minor assortment of small grinding attachments (took all of 45 min.)

Picked up a Saiga online for $279.95 at Gilbert's Guns. After mailing and transfer fees, the cost was $299. a terrific bargain. Mine has a sticky reciever cover though.

Besides what I listed, a drill press, a ball-peen hammer, needle nosed pliers, and U-drives. Didn't even press the barrel out.

If it's any comfort, I didn't see NORINCO products in WalMart China either.
