I saw the handguns episode yesterday - it was great. I've set my DVR to record the series.

What a cool job. How does one get such a gig? Not only does he do stuff we all want to do, he probably gets paid fairly well!

Yep, I'm jealous.

Join the Marines. Get medically discharge. Be in a bunch of movies as a hard arse drill instructor. Get tv show on the History channel and get the Pentagon's attention that you make a good recruitment tool. Profit.

Also, the suicide of Private Pyle in many ways was one of the most disturbing scenes not only in FMJ but in any war picture that I have seen.

I would agree.....but equally cringing was his role as "Mayor Tilman" in "Mississippi Burning" where he nearly gets castrated with a dull razor blade.

Be made of pure awesome.

Unfortunately, we need to wait for Gunny to return to the environment to have such a surplus of pure awesome to mine for it.

I am quite sure he mis-idetified the gun on the Sherman tank as a 75mm. The great majority had 75mm guns but the one that was shown was the latter model with a much more powerful 76mm gun.

Correct me if I am wrong. I am no expert in this.

Anyone notice the abrasion on Gunny's forehead after firing the .44 or .500? I'll bet he got it during one of the two, as the video showed those guns bucking up pretty well. If anyone sees him in the next month or so, they ought to rag on him about it!

He's just an actor reading a script.
He says just what he is directed to say.
Lots of small technical errors.
He is much less annoying in the new show, though.

I've seen some of his stuff I liked and others that didn't seem all that good. I've recorded this new stuff, but haven't really watched it yet. I'll have to turn it on.

He's more than "just an actor"

Gunnery Sergeant Ermey did a tour in Vietnam and holds the following awards:

Combat Action Ribbon
Meritorious Unit Commendation
Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal
Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm

And you?

"tests during world war two showed that the more lead you throw downrange, the more likely you are to win."
i think it's funny how he can make all of those scientific tests and what not that come up with complicated results look so simple and more like a DUH moment than anything else.

Doesnt bother me.

Camera ain't a two-way kind of machine.

(I assume theres no camera man behind the shots)

I guess it can set a bad example though...
I thought this at first too, but in a number of shots the horizon is visibly bouncing behind him. This means there is a camera man involved. Now, he might be behind seven layers of ballistic glass or something, I dunno, but I agree - I'd like to see more muzzle discipline, even if the lack of safety is just an illusion, it tends to convey the wrong message.

That said, I love the show, but it brought up a few questions for me.

First of all, what are the legalities of all those privately owned cannons and tanks? I always assumed there was some sort of exception for muzzle-loaded cannons, but he's shown a large number of modern breech loading cannons and fully operational tanks. What laws do these fall under?

Secondly, where in the world is he finding live 37mm and 76mm anti-tank rounds for sale?! In the case of the 76mm on the M18 Hellcat - the one where his hat is blown off by the muzzle blast, I don't even think the owner had ever fired the main cannon before. He turns to Gunny after the shot and says, "Holy s***!"

Finally... Isn't Gunny still an active Glock spokesman? One second he's touting the .45 and M1911 as the greatest guns on earth and "Ew, I don't even want to touch it." when handed a Beretta, and at the next minute he's practically humping the Glock as the "pinnacle of handgun evolution."

The only one I can remember now was calling the lebel cartridge La Belle (it came up on screen) but there were definitely quite a few other technical errors in the machine gun and tank episodes which are the only two I've seen, I was really disappointed they didn't cover the BAR either. Entertaining show but they need better researchers.

I notice that Gunny uses spent catridge casings in place of ear-plugs. Has anyone else tried this? Does it work?

Any non-sporting firearm over .50 caliber would be classified as a destructive device, and regulated by the National Firearms Act.

As far as ammo, they likely custom make the cases, bullets, and hand load them. But it's probably pretty rare that they shoot them, if ever.

Only if you don't mind premature hearing loss. It likely blocks enough of the noise out that it no longer hurts physically, but it doesn't need to hurt to harm your hearing.

Ron dog, great pic haha! I love R. Lee in general as well s on lock and load but you gotta give him credit, the man is a great actor (Full Metal Jacket/ pure awesomeness) haha with a great current show. to meet that man would be an honor!

The straight skinny on shooting 76mm cannons and AT guns

Gentleman: I am the owner of the M18 Hellcat in the Lock and Load 'anti-tank' piece as well as the 57mm gun. The 37mm gun is owned by R Shaver of Phoenix (the tall red head!).
First things first - It is perfectly legal to own a tank or tank destroyer or anti-tank gun in the USA....without a live gun in it. When you have a live gun (remarks apply to guns greater than 0.5 caliber)the boys at BATF requore that it be licensed as a "destructive device". This uses the same process as used to buy and own a machine gun....application with fingerprints, $200 (one-time payment) for transfer tax. After that...keep it secure and use the same process to sell to another person.
Second thing, HE ammunition for AT guns is considered a destructive device" in and of itself. Therefore, to use or make one would require the payment of the $200 transfer tax plus the aforementioned paperwork. You could do it - no prohibition against owning or making or firing HE rounds but the $200 transfer tax would apply to each round and your $200 would evaporate each time you pulled the trigger:eek: We were shooting solid projectiles with hardened penetrators (except for nthe 37mm M3 guns, which were shooting mild steel projectiles). the ammo is manufactured by yours truly from 3"-50 projectiles (from demilled military projectiles and some welding on of machined penetrators), recycled military cannon powder, and remanufactured primer tubes. Shell casings are surplus steel cases or from demilled ammo or once-fired. The loads are reduced from full military. No need to wear out rifled bores when shooting cars and 3/4" steel plates at 200 yards or so;)
The cost to drive around on the ranch (in western NM), getting the TD there, putting 85 gallons of av gas in the tanks, manufacturing the ammo, and the logistics of staying out of town for three days during the shoot was all paid for by THC! I might have done it for free but since they got paid for the production, I thought I should get paid for the expenses I was laying out:)......it was hard work, tiring, 7 am - 6 pm for three days for the short segments on the 3 anti-tank guns! AND the weather was brutal in early April when the filming took place. In fact, it snowed on the afternoon of the third day and the crew abandoned further filming and headed out for Loveland, CO, for the Stuart tank segment.
Final comment, I have been shooting the main 76mm gun in the Hellcat for more than three years. Probably have put 50+ rounds through it at various shoots here in the Sunny SW.....mainly at the Wikieup shoot (which by the way is open to the public and will be happening on October 15-18, 2009, see the MG Shooters website for info and photos). I knew the muzzle blast from the M18 main gun was severe; it had torn several tarps off of canopies nearby the year before. The guy that said "SOB" following the hat blow off scene was the sound man, not me. Notice, I was wearing goggles and ear protection....I knew what to expect! The hat blow off was a suprise and demostrated correctly the level of muzzle blast from the M18. Normally at MG and cannon shoots no one is sitting in the driver and co-driver's seats - they are all in the turret or behind the breech....you don't get the full muzzle blast back there.
The high speed video was great...look carefully for the molten metal flying back from the projectile impact wiht the steel plates in the slo-mo portion. I have been told that is caused by the steel in the plate passing it's elastic limit and acting like a spalsh from a water puddle. Owning a Hellcat is not expensive, IF you don't take it anywhere....It cost $1000 to get it to the ranch for the shoot (89 miles one way)!...tractor trailer with double drop deck low boy and overwidth permits. The Wikieup shoot costs $4000 for transportation so the Hellcat only goes there every other year or so....too pricey for a yearly event and then the ammo cost on top of that.....projectiles are now running about $80 each! and getting scarce!
If ayone has an questions....I'll be happy to try and answer them....BTW Ermy is a cool dude!!!! On and off camera!

I have watched several episodes and really like the show. I agree he is one guy I would like to meet.

On the handgun show he did confuse me. In one show he said the 1911 was his all time favorite pistol, and then when on to make comments on the Glock.
So we should assume the 1911 is his favorite, but he like the Glock for its modern appeal?

And I also agree, he should set a better example on muzzle control.
gee i wonder why he talked about Glocks...

Thanks for the great back-story! And great to hear about how Mr Ermy is off camera as well. :)

I have a question. Do you keep your tank in a tactical state of readiness and have perimeter alarms set up on your property so the Hell Cat could respond to any attempted trespassing? :p

I know i would!

gee i wonder why he talked about Glocks...

Because he like Glocks...
That man has done enough for our country that I could give two ****s if he makes a little money off an endorsement
