Locktite problem

A buddy of mine bought a scope, but the guy he bought it from used locktite (red 272) on the clamp rail. He would like to know if there is a way to break the locktite bond with out using too much heat? I cant remember if there is a penitrating type of locktite that breaks the bond so thats why I am asking.

The only way to break the bond is with heat. It won't take too much. Start with a soldering iron, you can pin point the heat very well with that on small screws. If you need more use a small butane pin point torch, carefully put the heat only on the screws. If you are worried about damage to the scope try wrapping the surrounding area with a damp rag, while you heat the screws.

Most loctite and epoxy breaks loose at about 400F, do it like Zog suggests.

I have had the same thing happen to me when I bought a used rifle. Someone had used the red loctite on the screws that held the bases on. They were really, really tight. I decided to take the gun to a machine shop and get them to drill the screws out. The guys at the shop took the rifle out of the stock and then put a few drops of laquer thinner on top of the screw heads and then returned about every 10 minutes for thirty minutes and did the same. The machinist then took a screwdriver and simply turned the screws out. He told me the laquer thinner will soften the loctite so the screws can be removed. Just have to take your time he said. They used a plastic mallet and tapped the bases a few times before they put thinner on the screw heads. I guess that lets the thinner find its way down to the threads. That is how I got my loctited screws out. Cost $8.00. If I had tried it myself I would probably have screwed up much more than that. If you do decide to use laquer thinner it is best to remove the stock and any plastic items because the thinner will ruin your finish on the stock and melt plastic pieces. My rifle is blued and the thinner did not discolor the finish at all.
