Going through some old stuff I ran across what very much seems to be a 1911 mag but it will not fit into my 10mm pistol. It’s too long front to back by a small margin but enough that it seems intentional. Are there long 1911 mags for something like 38 super? I remember having the same issue when I had a 45acp 1911 as well. If I can figure out what it is for I will gladly put it in the mail to someone who needs it. Again, it’s almost identical to my 10mm mags except for the front to back length. I will take a pic next time I get my hands on it.

When you take the picture, see if you can compare it side by side with a mag you know everything about.

Could be any number of things. Star P series, for example, are slightly larger so won't fit in a 1911. But lots of single stack .45 made. Sig? Astra? FEG?

Check mag latch and look real close for marks also. Maybe some hint somewhere.

Standard 8 round Tokarev mag is roughly 1.47" long X 4.2" tall X .49" wide. I could also measure a CZ 52 mag, but those don't have magazine catches.

that Tokarev is a cool round, any modern gun shoots that?
Zastava arms still makes the M57.

Correction, they make the M57A. As far as I can tell, it has a different firing pin system compared to both traditional Tokarev designs, and the M57 as well as a slide mounted safety.

45acp and 38 Super are so close in OAL that I'd be surprised if magazine was much different front to back dimensions.
Very true. And even the .38 Special case with wadcutters is still under a 45 Auto cartridge OAL.

Could it be a knock off Coonan 357 magazine? All the ones I’ve ever seen were silver colored though.

Where does the 10mm not fit? The rim on a 357 is .440” the 10mm .424”. Does the rib constrict the front too much?

The mag catch hole is an odd oblong size.
The ribs clearly suggest feeding 0.35 range ammo.

There is a possibility that is a .38acp magazine, the precursor to the .38super. And, you'd not want the latter to chamber up in the former on a per se basis.

Now, if a legit .38acp mag, it's worth quite a few kwatloos, as those are not common on the ground (and the pistols chambered for the round are often missing magazines).

What about 9mm largo? Longer than 9, and I believe they made 1911 style pistols in that cartridge.

At first I was thinking Star because they are just barely to wide, but they have a different base and follower cut out in the mag body.

Now this Llama 38 super mag is a tad too wide as well and everything seems to match up to yours except for witness holes which could have easily been changed over the years.

This 38 Super has been in my family for over 50 years.
