Long Range Rifle/Scope/PRS question(s)

Are the cracks the result of excess heating and quick cooling which causes localized hardened steel and cracking which eventually flakes off? Throat erosion?
Yes, normal throat/barrel erosion from hot high pressure gases. The more you shoot it, the worse it gets. A lot of people never put 2K rounds down a bore. Shooting rounds in a hurry in the heat (PRS in the South), is worse than shooting slow in the cold.

Here is the same barrel earlier in its life. Starting to wash out a little, tiny bit of cracking top of neck.

Here is a different barrel (MPA 6 Creed), fairly early in its life.

Here are the Meopta's on the Outdoorsman Tripod Adapter. Very solid, will rotate a hair on the stud, but no wiggle or wobble.
Pops off easy enough, but definitely won't come off by accident. The Arca Adapter on the bottom of the mount fits my ball head perfectly.
You could just screw the mount onto the quick release plate that comes with your tripods head, but I like this set up.

How do you like the hydroforming? I was going to do that for the Dasher with the Whidden kit but ended up with Alpha Brass instead.

It’s a labor of love. I had some issues with Alpha brass, so I went back to Lapua, despite the need to form cases.

Generally, I would prefer to fireform with false shoulder method, and I’d even do fireforming at 1 day regional/club level matches. But this season, work has been in the way, I’ve been switching bullets around based on availability, and of course, powder and primers are hard to come by, so I elected to hydroform. I also usually prefer to fireform on an old barrel if possible before swapping to the new tube, but in this case, I already swapped barrels...

But that’s why I own the hydroforming kit - so I have the option if and when I need it.

Every so often I get the idea that I might offer hydroforming service to other shooters... and then I have an opportunity to hydroform and remember that I can’t be paid enough to do this for anyone else (although my 8yr old son is doing pretty well with it, and he’s willing to work for a much lower wage than I! Lol!)

What issue did you have with the Alpha cases?

I noticed really inconsistent seating pressure right out of the box, and velocity was commensurately unstable.

I haven’t used the OCD brass, not sure what the difference might be, but Lapua keeps me happy. Even if I do have to get a little wet and wild, or fireform every couple of years.

I had my chamber cut for Alpha OCD/Lapua Brass per my smith's recommendation (he's a ranked PRS shooter as well and swears by the OCD brass)
So far no issues- 499 rounds of Alpha OCD fired and I'm happy with it. the remaining piece of brass is my dummy round.
I did fireform 200 pieces of Lapua 6BR initially as well while i waited for the Alpha to be delivered.

I just spent several hours over the last few days re-reading this entire thread, which is a great trove of information. Kudos to @Walkalong for kicking it off and sharing the journey with us. I also appreciate the collective wisdom of the group, especially @taliv and @Varminterror.

I'm on the brink of purchasing a new competition gun and am about settled on a MPA BA PMR Pro II in 6 GT. I'd been thinking I'd go with a 6 Creedmoor but the GT seems like a good option, providing many of the benefits of the 6BR/Dasher family but less finnicky about chambering from standard magazines.

MPA is saying 18-20 weeks for a new rifle, so it'll be a while before it's in hand. I'll keep you posted.

They make a great product, and the Pro II is a good value. I think the GT is a good choice since you’re reloading.

My buddy Jeff really likes his GT, also on an Axiom action. He was shooting 6 Creed before he got his GT. He just got a new pre-fit Proof GT barrel and will be getting it ready to shoot a match soon.

congrats man!
not sure what other's experiences are, but i don't remember any vendors beating a date they quoted when something isn't in stock. usually they're a couple months late. so prepare yourself mentally for a wait

Thanks. In the interim, I will continue to shoot my .260 Remington and .243 Ackley in our club matches. Unfortunately, I'm out of town when the next NRL22 match is scheduled. I discovered there is a club about two hours away that runs regular PRS matches; I'll work on getting down to one of those as my schedule permits. I'm in pretty good physical shape for my age, but I need to practice getting into positions quickly. I'll have to build one of the "backyard barricades" to practice on.

My Leupold Mk5 came in. 5-25x56 with the PR1 reticle. I went back and forth about going with a tree reticle with his scope but I dont compete and I really like the Mil-C reticle in my ATACR which is similar.

I have surgery coming up in a week and a half so Im out of commission until September. But that okay since the rifle this is going on isn't supposed to be ready until around that time as well. That's only if Alamo Precision Rifles meets their estimate, which during these days Im not holding my breathe on.

I cant do a real side by side comparison right now with my 7-35 ATACR since I dont have anything to put this. However I have shot a 7-35 Mk5 alongside my ATACR and this Mk5 appears to be in line with the other one. Id say the glass quality is slightly behind the ATACR but not bad in any way. But I am comparing a 2000 dollar scope to a 3200 dollar scope, so Id expect a little bit of difference. But scoping out mountain tops around my house anywhere from 900 yards to 1900 yards the clarity and color it great. You arent going to miss anything because of the glass quality.

The turret feel is good. The clicks are tactile and audible. The clicks feel different than my ATACR. Deciding which one is better would be pure personal preference. I really like the zero lock feature. The offset windage marking is odd but not a deal breaker. I hold for wind anyways, so it will only be used for zeroing.

The magnification ring is stiff but smooth. Im going to keep the supplied nub on as it doesnt get in the way and works well. The nub is a 7 oclock at 5 power and 1 oclock at 25. The parallax knob is smooth and easy to use. I have been to the range with it yet so I dont know how well the yardage marks line up. The scope also comes with a sun shade which I probably wont use and a set of nice Leupold branded lens caps. The lens caps arent as nice as the Tenebraex caps on the ATACR, but Im not looking to replace them at this time.

Aesthetically the scope just looks good to me. It has kind of the classic "tactical" scope look. I really like the long sweeping front bell and the turret housing area is not overly clunky looking.

For rings Im trying out the American Rifle Company M10 hinged rings. They seem to be very well made and very easy to get the scope clamped in as it only uses a single large screw per ring.

Awesome, and great information.

After a year plus of buying parts, my Bartlein barrel came from Altus (sorry Impact, I kept looking, was on the notify list, but no joy). I put it all together this afternoon. Riding to dinner right now, older son’s birthday, more pics later.

Dogs were a big help.

Beautiful rifle. I see you went with the same rings I did. Who makes the action and stocks? Defiance and Manners?

Went to shoot my PRS match today- 30 rounds in - I manage to rip my bolt stop out, punch myself in the cheek with the bolt, and miss the target.
Broken screw on the bolt stop on the Defiance Action.
Needless to say, broken rifle, no spare rifle with me (shame on me) and a DNF for score today.
Not the best shooting day lol.
So I’m already 70% loaded up for July Match lol

Damp first day at the STC Punisher Positional today. Shanked two stages and cost myself ~10pts below my average on the rest of the stages, and I shanked two bad trigger pulls I wish I could get back, but the course of fire is always fun at this one. We got a little wet at one point, and visibility was right on the edge of the farthest target, but the drizzle offered nearly ideal wind indication! New for this year, the range had added rain/sun canopies over most stages, and all of the RO’s were provided tents, so it was pretty easy to stay dry during the short drizzle. With those 2 bad stages, I’ll be sleeping tonight on a relatively abysmal 69 impacts for 72points on day 1, hoping to hold better consistency on day 2. Unlike this MD’s past habits, there are no traps between Day 1 and Day 2, it’s a contiguous 20 stage CoF with 20 squads so there’s no change in execution on Day 2, we just shoot our respective half the first day and the other half the second day. In other matches, this MD has built “day 1 stages” and “day 2 stages,” 2:00 for day 1, 90sec for day 2, and usually a lot more movement, smaller targets, less stable positions, etc., but this time it’s a bit more - predictable and consistent... So I’m hopeful to reduce my point bleed tomorrow and improve my percentage - even if I might not improve my match rank by much.

ETA: I was able to maintain much improved consistency on day 2. I made 82 impacts out of 98 possible, ~84.5%, landing me at 78.28 points for the match. The winning shooter only missed 5 shots out of 198. I raised 11 places from day 1 to 2. Unfortunately, if I’d not shanked those two stages and shot my average for the other 18 stages on those two, I would have been up another 10 points, and raise another 17 places, so it’s super frustrating to have dropped those two stages!! Every impact counts for a lot this season.
