Long Range Rifle/Scope/PRS question(s)

Some optic turrets are more forgiving than others in preventing the dreaded dev off

but I don’t dial back to zero right away. My pre-stage check, when the RO says “is the shooter ready?” Includes glancing at the turret to make sure it reads zero.

coming off the stage I sometimes need to think about what my dope originally said and what I wound up getting hits with so I’ll want to go back and reference current setting on turret. But I usually do get it set back to zero well before coming to the line on the next stage

All of this. Data left on the turret is data to be analyzed, good or bad. Bolt back, mag out, flag in, confirm score on ipad, police brass. Set my rifle off of the line, pull my card from the rifle, then go write down the stage review. I might come back to the turret if things went ugly.

I hang my data card on my rifle when the shooter ahead of me takes the line, and I dial backwards to my zero stop, then up to my first range for the stage at that time. When I wore a wrist coach, I pre-printed data forms which had “Scope caps, sling, bipod, DOPE, mag, FREE RECOIL” typed across the top border. That was my checklist upon, “shooter ready?” command from the RO, before giving the nod ready to hear, “time starts now.”

Ok, most of the parts have arrived, but it still feels like something is missing...

Hopefully the barrel will be here in the next few weeks. I'm also waiting for brass to ship, but after that I'll be in business, dies are already at the bench.

I'll probably use the same rings I had on my RPR for my initial testing while my gun fund picks itself up off the floor, They are hilariously high for this setup though, here is the cheek piece raised to the right level for these rings, lol.

I am glad I went with the MDT XRS chassis, it strikes me as a little ugly, but man is it solid feeling, and the fit and finish is excellent.

I know I'm supposed to buy Spuhr or ARC rings, but these Burris XTR Signature rings have performed perfectly over the last few years, so I'll probably just buy another shorter set.

(That MDT chassis does have that “so ugly it works vibe” - but it does look good).

Nothing wrong with the XTR Signature rings - great contact and hold, and the plastic inserts offer a relatively unique opportunity to cleanly add elevation to your rifle. They’re a little bulkier than they could be, and I question their ring heights sometimes (1” Burris rings were .2” taller than 1” Seekins rings, go figure), but they’re solid.

So much angle on this one, you can see it with the naked eye 60moa, aka 1 degree!

Speaking of rings, I ordered some XLR rings, hope they are nice, price is good. I have Seekins, ARC, Badger, TPS, Steiner, MPA mount, and I can reccomend any of those. Yes, I like some better than others, but they are all well made.

XLR Rings, will be used on a .22 LR to hold the Crimson Trace scope I bought 50% off a few months back.

I also bought a Crimson Trace scope a few months ago at 50% off. I think it was at Cabela’s.

Tough question. Better than Bushnell Forge, about like Vortex PST Gen II. Glass is so much of a personal preference/users eye issue. Click adjustments could be crisper/more positive.

We took the Vudoo and the Bergara .22 LR rifles out today and played a little at 50 and 100 yards, and this mug forgot to take pics.....

I put my first "big thank you" covid bonus 100% into the 403B, but the even more unexpected second one paid for a Vudoo barreled option.

It is seriously slick, expensive, but shoots like a dream, action is slick as snot. I put it in the Manners. Balances very well.

The Bergara is very nice, and I like it a lot, but dang this Vudoo is nice.

I'll do better next time.

Got my barrel in a few days ago (23" 6mm GT), I think it will be a few weeks before I can take it out, but I'm hoping to get everything screwed together and mounted this weekend.

I also got 100 Hornady brass from Midsouth that wound up being GAP branded. I thought about ordering Alpha, but figured I'd check out the Hornady GT cases firsts since I'd heard good things. They look quite nice, I'll probably go ahead and pick up a couple hundred more if the first load tests look good.

The GT fits in nicely between my 6mm ARC and 6.5 Creedbro, should be fun to play with.

Very cool, yea, my buddy Jeff has had good luck with Hornady GT cases. Not as tough as Alpha, but good accuracy and case life. He clocked his GT at 3079 Wed evening with 108 Bergers

I am at work, waiting for Jeff, we’re shooting at Altus today

I've only had the chance so fondle a few Voodoos briefly, they are certainly very nice. Heard good things about the Bergara too, understand that the Voodoo is the top dog, just not sure I need that, how do you like the Bergara for the price? Does it shoot with the Voodoo? Is it smooth enough to function cleanly and reliably?

Glad to hear he's having good luck with his Hornady cases, it seems like some of their offerings are substantially better than others (I had much better luck with their 6.5 CM cases than .308)

I've snagged 300 112gr MBs and 100 108gr ELDs to try, pickings are still pretty slim for 6mm around here. I'm hoping for ~2,850 out of my 23" 6GT with the 112gr MBs, don't really want to lean on it too much as I'm sure near 6mm CM velocities = near 6mm CM barrel life, Tanstaafl afterall. I think I can run a little slower with the slick heavies and still do what I want... that's the theory anyway, we'll see how it jives with reality.

The Bergara is very nice and a very good value if you need/want a 700 SA pattern .22 LR. I have a TT Primary in the Bergara and I like it, butthe BixN Andy Tac Pro can have a much lower pull weight. Of course one can put that in the Bergara as well. The Vudoo would definitely make shots a bit easier it's so smooth, but the Bergara is very good, just not freaking awesome like the Vudoo, but you sure pay for it.make

Hey why did they put the vertical post on the angled post? Why not just put a bench out there for you to shoot off of? When I shot there it was just a 45* piece of wood. Uphill both ways. In the snow

“Safety.”

Which in common English roughly translates into, “pro shooters bitch too much if they can’t build a rock solid position”.
Who or what is a pro shooter ?
Tough to make a living shooting weather you wear someone's jersey for bullets or entry fees. I really haven't seen anyone drawing a salary but then I don't get out much either.

Lol don’t start. Every time the PRS changes hands, the definition of “pro” changes.
Originally it was used to mean people who had shot at least a certain number of matches and placed in top half or something, just to differentiate so we could accommodate new shooters (eg for entry in the pro-am team match). Later it became a tool for people wearing jerseys. Despite the common worldwide use of the term, in shooting it’s never meant someone who earns a living, or is even paid, for shooting

One of the problems with wearing a jersey is being expected to promote those particular sponsored products that may not be what the shooters has been using or top tier but that's another discussion.
Good to have a mentor program to advance the disciple.

My brother in law bought a LMT MWS this weeks (contract overrun 20 inch 6.5 CM) and asked me to mount the scope on it. Scope is a gen 1 Viper PST in an ADM mount.

I recently bought one of the Arisaka scope leveling wedge kits and it worked like a charm. Definitely the easiest time Ive ever had installing a scope. It was 30 bucks or so and worth every penny.

He's going to be selling a DPMS AR10 here in the near future and plans to upgrade the optics on the LMT. Probably looking at a Leupold Mk5 or a Razer Gen2.
