Two head shot rabbits at 40 yards. No rest, With 4in 357 colt. One at a time of course. And about 10 min later one more same thing. No scope.

polished off a skunk at 60 yards w/ a 4" 686 and 38 specials.
dumped a rabbit at 105 yards and a 22 lr.

most of my stuff is scoped, so i guess that about covers it...

Shot a woodchuck at 135 paces with my stainless Ruger MKII 10" bull. used my horse trailer doorframe as a brace with my off hand. I don't remember what brand of .22s I was using...

i shot two rabbits, one after another with my gamo shadow 1000 .177 cal pellet gun. were only around 30 paces away. was standing and around dusk. not a quigley down under shot, but made for good eatin. brian

Varmints

I took a Utah Jackrabbit at 635 yrds, (confirmed with rangefinder) with a 22-250 handloaded 52 gr. Speer JHP. The rifle used was an Interarms Mark X 24" barrel topped with a old Weaver 3X9 scope. The shot was taken using the hood of my truck as a rest.

Wow, great thread!

Redirect, w/o meaning without, no scope...using iron-sights.

One day, my brother and I went to state land to shoot. I took my expensive Weatherby; he had his WWII Brit .303! He saw a sparrow at about 100 yards out. Now, he told me that he had shot several sparrows as he sighted-in his rifle for deer season. As I scoffed, and retorted, right, he responded, "Watch this! I'll nail it first round."

Now, me being the kid brother, I expected that he was joking. God as my witness, he nailed that sparrow on the first round. There was nothing but a cloud of feathers.

Of course I said, right...luck...pure luck! So, he looked at me and said, "Okay smart@$$, let's see ya do that with yur fancy rifle! Luck!? Watch that branch that it was perched on!"

I'll be danged it if he didn't nail it too! Call it luck, call it skill; call it what you will. But he nailed that sparrow on the first shot. He nailed the small branch 1" in diameter on the second shot! I darned near dropped my teeth as the branch dangled by a thin strand of bark!

That was with his old iron-sighted .303 Brit!

I have scopes on all my guns except 2 shotguns and a Ruger Single Six revolver, because I see a lot better that way and makes me less likely to go for the "Hail Mary" shots on critters. The only scopeless kills I've made have been with shotguns in the short distance of shotgun range.

Groundhog, .22LR

First, let me state that this was on a farm where getting rid of groundhogs was more of a concern than getting rid of them humanely. They were running rampant, eating alfalfa like it was going out of style and two cows got broken knees because of their holes. We were using guns, traps, poison, neighborhood kids with rifles, etc.

I proned out with a .22LR bolt action and my Dad stood behind me with a pair of binoculars watching for dirt splash. At the first shot the groundhog stood up to see what the noise was. About the tenth or so round, we heard the bullet hit meat. He ran, but we found him a few days later when we were out spraying. Paced off to the "impact zone" and got a little over two hundred paces.

My longest small game shot without a scope was at groundhogs
with .22 rifle at what turned out to be 250 yards. Both me and
my friend had underestimated the range by at least 100 yards
so there were no hits (the field was not dry enough for the misses
to kick up dust).

Cat with a 22 rifle open sights at as best I could pace 240 yards. Folks would dump cats off down from our place and they would mill around and starve for a few days till a coyote or fox or whatever would get em, and I had practiced up some. IMHO housecats running lose are a plague on mankind anyway.
Have shot several ground squirrels at distances you had to hold over a foot or two to hit, but they were all lucky shots.

Many squirrels at 50+ yards, rifle and handgun. One of the best shots I remember was a rabbit on a dead run at 40 yards with a .22 off hand. Then there was a rabbit at about 20 yards head shot.....with a NAA 1" barrel mini revolver. I was as proud of that one as any. LOL!

When I was a kid, I had a few good shots on squirils, rabbits, and birds out to about 100 yards with a Benjamin Sheridan pellet gun in 20 cal. The gun was old when my dad got it before I was born. I shot a rabit at about 40 yards with the same gun last year.

I'd tell you about the Barn Swallow I bagged on the wing with a BB gun when I was a kid & didn't know any better, but even now, many years later my butt starts to throb when I recall Dad sharing HIS opinion of the feat with me . . . started my interest in stock-making however as I spent the next couple weeks whittling a replacement for the plastic factory original that was shaped remarkably like the bruise on my a$$ . . . would have been a great pattern had it been easier for me to access.

I once waited 45 minutes for a squirrel to come around from the other side of the tree. 2nd to that 110yds black bird using an old walther target 22.

when i was working at an ice skating rink we had a toad hop into the building and get stuck on the ice. i shot it with a benjamin .177 about 5 times from 100 ft away and it still wouldn't die. so we got the zambonie and scrapped it up with the blade.

Prairie Dog

If Prairie Dogs count as "Game"

About 175 yards with my .22 LR. Paced off with an x-Marine rifleman. I had to "walk" the bullets up to it though :)

longest game shot

When I was about 14 years old I used an old stevens junior single shot rolling block 22 long rifle. Gun had belonged to my grandad and I inherited it. One day across the field from our house my dad saw a ground hog setting up in the just emerging bean crop. He said get your gun and sneak down there. Well I knew I wouldn't be able to get close as it was all open field between him and me, so just for the heck of it I took a bead on him and then raised over his head about 4 feet. Squeezed the trigger and after a short pause the woodchuck dropped down. I figured I had missed but he didn't seem to be moving. Now this was a good 800 feet away from where we were. We went down there and that old unlucky ground hog was dead! I got it right in the eye and my dad had witnessed it. Most people never believed it had happened but my dad saw me do it and that was all that mattered. That was 50 years ago.

I hit a squirrel with a dead on head shot at about 60 yards with an open sighted bolt action 22.

I was in my backyard with my two young sons back in the 1980s.
We spotted it way up in the woods.

"Daddy, can you hit that?"

It was a lucky shot. I couldn't believe it.
