Looking at 22 magnums

I don't think anyone mentioned the old Mossberg Chuckster 640 series. I had a couple which I scoped and were accurate .They are built like a tank compared to modern guns. You'll find them at a reasonable price.

Id often take 2 rifles groundhogging.
Heavy centerfire for setting up over a field.
A .22 mag for when things are boring, head down to the fencerow/creek and sneak around.

.22 mag in a rifle does decent 75 yards and in.
Much better than 22 lr.
Have shot chucks w Hyper V .22 LR and still prefer a magnum.

Must admit, 24" .22 mag sure is polite compared to .223 and .22-250.
I don't have a suppressor.

I am going to put a scope on it. Probably a 1-4 power, but I am not sure what brand.

Edit: It’s funny, peep sights are okay for me, but regular and buckhorn sights just don’t look right any more.
Your not alone!!!!!

I swear by CCI Maxi Mags in my 783. They are the most accurate ammo that I can buy these days, and I can't remember the last FTF that I had from them. The old Winchester JHP stuff was excellent as well, but essentially non-existent now. Winchester Dyna-point is absolute junk; out of a box of 50 there were 15 failures to fire. Totally unacceptable! As far as other brands, I can't really comment as I don't buy them.

CCI Maxi Mags works the best and is the most accurate out of my CMR30. The PMR30 is not very accurate but I never expected it to be. I've never had a 22WMR handgun that was anywhere near as accurate as a rifle.

I have a Marlin 983 bolt-action in .22 Mag and it is paired with (for now) a Keltec PMR-30. I also have the Ruger Single Six Convertible but none of these guns have been fired enough with different ammos to determine the accuracy of the various ammos.
I have considered getting the CMR-30 BUT, knowing what a fun "ammo waster" my 10/22 has been, I hesitate because of the cost of the ammo.

Agree mostly. I actually threw away Dynapoint cause it was so awful. CCI maxi mag and maxi mag + V are only so so in my 77/22 but they do always go bang.. The 33 gr Remington Premier have always been good for me and so is the Winchester JHP.

Don't buy the argument that 22 Magnum is not as accurate as 22LR. My 22 magnums are as accurate as my 22 LRs when using non-match ammo in them. It's not until I get into match ammo that costs about the same as 22 magnum ammo that my 22 LRs creep ahead in accuracy, and then it's not enough to make any practical difference for my applications. I suspect if a manufacturer would develop match 22 magnum, it'd sell very well and perform as good as 22 LR match ammo. You will generally have to experiment more to find a 22 magnum's accuracy load than 22LR. You'll also likely find several 22LR loads that perform well. My 22 magnums seem to have just one that they really like.

On game like raccoons, possums and fox, it packs appreciably more wallop than the LR.

See, I never could get any respectable accuracy out of the Remington offerings. Why I can't say, since I have a buddy that uses them, likes them, and claims they shoot well. I always preferred the Winchester JHP, but as I said previously I cannot find them anywhere around here. If you can point me to a good source for them, I'd be grateful. So it's the CCIs for me, since they're in darn near every store around me and they're cheap too. They're plenty accurate out of my 783, and they kill well too. For my use, they're plenty fine for plinking critters too big or too far away for the 22lr.

True that, when I shot .22 Mag for the first time in a rifle, I was surprised that it didn't sound louder than hyper velocity .22 LR.

Cheaper Than Dirt (multiple brands) - https://www.cheaperthandirt.com/ammunition/rimfire/22-magnum/ Armscor is the least expensive at $12.89/50 JHP.
Fast Ammo - also Armscor 40 gr JHP but only $9.50/50 BUT looking through "AmmoSeek.com", they had a listing at Fast Ammo for the same ammo but only $7.85/50 !!

A year ago I tried Hornady .22 WMR V-Max 30 Grain ammo. So far it's my most accurate round in all my 22 mag guns and cycles in my auto's better than any other round I've tried. Very effective on stopping varmints as well. Usually runs about $10.50 to $13. Only 22 WRM ammo I get now

I wish I'd bought a 22 mag barrel for my CZ455 when I got it. Phenomenal accuracy with premium lr ammo and I'm sure it would outdo the Ruger 77-22M I had which was my high water mark for that cartridge. I've had the old H&R 22WMR auto, a Savage, another Savage, an H&R single, and the Ruger. Hindsight!

I’ve owned several.22wrm’s.
The present “keeper” is a Marlin M882 SS. Essentially the 883 except it has a box detachable magazine. ACCURATE!
Near MOA at 100yds with jacketed hollow pts (Win 40gr JHP,) or CCI with Speer JSP (Game Points].
(7-shot mags).
We are limited to .22rf, M/Loaders, or Shotguns w/#4 shot or smaller on WMA’s in small game and no .22rf during Turkey seasons. And that’s where the pigs are…. In Turkey season, I use the M/L for pigs, but you only get 1 shot! I have a second magazine for 7+7+1 in chamber, with the.22mag.

My experience too (along with the virtually identical CCI 30 grain varmint load). My Marlin 783 loves both rounds.

I don’t have a WMR rifle, only a mini revolver & this

It’s got some interesting engineering incorporated into the chamber & functions well with the higher velocity ammo. Great fireball for a small caliber!

I cant remember but it was winchester 40 grain ammo. The hollow points hardly expanded and the solids mushroomed. Both were good.

Nasty… was that engraving stock? I don’t remember them being offered like that from AMT.

Dad's rifle was a Mossberg 640 topped with a Weaver D4. I never saw him shoot a group on paper, but he could take the top off a squirrels head at 30' every time.

I have nothing but good things to say about the 22 mag. Started shooting it in a Marlin 25M back in the 80s specifically for Fox squirrel hunting in the wind breaks of eastern North Dakota.

This Marlin 882SSV is a stellar shooter for its price range. Heavy varmint barrel profile. Largest game it’s dropped is a javelina with one shot to the head by a friends daughter.

At the other end of the price range is this Ruger M77/.22Mag. I don’t believe I’ve ever shot it so I can’t comment on accuracy.

IMG_1847.jpeg

Both are scoped with BSA Sweet .22 scopes. The Marlin having an older version. I worked at a sporting goods store in their shop for some time and lost count of how many of these I put on guns. In that time I never had one come back due to issues. For sure they’re an entry/economy level scope. However, for the money they are feature packed. Maybe in the future I’ll move the one off the Ruger for a Leupold or equivalent. For now since I don’t shoot it that’s in a holding pattern.
