The thread about why we are not shooting in competitions got me thinking about maybe trying it again.

I dont really know what IDPA or IPSC or USPSA mean. I know what they stand for but I dont know all their different rules and different classes within.

Instead of doing a boatload of research on the matter at first, I need to be pointed in the right direction. Im not into race guns or even autoloaders in general. I would like to compete in a revolver only type class.

Ideally it would be factory sights and setup and 6 round capacity cylinders 38 special. What class would this be?

Say I wanted to shoot an 8 round cylinder 38 special, what class would that be?

Could anyone point me to a link that would give the rules for said classes?

IDPA has 5 divisions, USPSA has 6. You wouldn't be shooting against the "race guns," unless that's what you have.

Your best bet for revolver shooting with speedloaders is either IDPA in Stock Service Revolver division, or ICORE in their "Retro" or "Classic" division, as it's been renamed.

You COULD shoot it in the Revolver division in USPSA/IPSC, but you'd be competing against full moon clipped guns.

Just hae fun

At my local Colorado USPSA matches I'm usually the only revolver shooter out of fifty-sixty shooters. This have been for about five years.
I have fun and learn something each time I shoot.
You can also shoot steel challenge with a six shot 38spl.
Check out the USPSA web site, they also have Steel Challenge
Have fun and shoot what you have.

The next thing I will have to find is a competition near me. Does not necissarily have to have organizational endorsement just something to get some trigger time in.

You may shoot a 8 shot revolver in IDPA but you may only load 6 rounds in it.
This will be a huge disadvantage on your reloads.

AFAIK, you can shoot this in ICORE "limited" class.

If you don't already have a revolver, I recommend a 4" 6-shot .38spl/.357mag. Nothing fancy, but for all-around versatility, it's hard to beat. You can shoot it in IDPA, ICORE, and even USPSA. Most wheelgunners shoot USPSA with moonclipped .45acp revolvers, but there's no reason you can't shoot a speedloader-fed .38spl. Believe it or not, a guy locally became the 1st, and AFAIK, the only guy to classify as a Grand Master in USPSA using speedloaders, and minor PF .38spl ammo.

You could also have a .38/.357 machined for moonclips, in which case you can use moonclips in USPSA and speedloaders for IDPA and ICORE "classic".

The most versatile revolver for competition, though, would be a 4" .45acp revolver. If you don't reload, ammo can be pricey, and there's more recoil to contend with.

In addition to sanctioned events, ask around about more informal "fun" shoots. A few local venues around here host formal sanctioned events, as well as occasional run-watcha-brung fun shoots, with relaxed equipment requirements.

Dont have a revolver yet for future said competitions. I did think about a 45 acp revolver and am still. It does seem to be the best for competition but if I wanted it for other utility such as other fun shoots and such I really like the 38 special already as I have 2 snubbies already. More to think on I suppose.

I am searching my local GA Gun Forum for local fun shoots and competitions as well.
