For your stated preferences in your price range, new, in no particular order:

STI Spartan
RIA Tactical
Ruger SR1911

These are by far your top choices. Buying used completely changes the scenario.

I know some people like the Taurus but after much research I encountered a preponderance of complaints, enough to put me off.

As for the Girsan -- at that price point I'd definitely go with the much more well-established RIA.

Read this, it's interesting and informative -- plus you get to look at a bunch of cool 1911s:

Lastly, 1911s for about $700 gets discussed a lot; run a search and you'll find plenty more info.

You cannot get them, as smalls said, in stainless steel or cherry red.
Not with 3-dots, or with two, there are others, that is true.
I like the Ruger quite a lot, but where to find one? Hard to spot.
Owners like them, sure enough, but where to buy one has been tough.

If you like stainless, what to do? Then Ceracoat it, good as new.
Or find that Ruger, if you care. Check the PX or a local gun fair.
With 3-dot sights and stainless steel, priced just right, one heck of a deal.
Either one might be for you, personally I like my guns blue.

PT1911's are sort of like gambling. If you get a good one, you'll never have any problems with it and you'll be completely clueless as to why so many people hate on Taurus. Or, if you get a lemon, you'll either sell it or nickel and dime your way to basically purchasing a new gun.

Guys are snatching up the RIAs. Buy the $450 1911 then replace the slide stop, thumb safety, grip safety, trigger, hammer, sear and disco. Put some new stocks on it, buy an EGW bushing, maybe a Kart EZ-Fit barrel, new sights and call it a day. Love hearing how it's $200 cheaper than the Spartan (filled with premium parts), just good economic sense!

Regardless of what you choose brand wise try to find one that has every last feature you want. Replacement parts can get expensive quick.

Sorry 'bout the Green Eggs and Hammin it up post earlier, cold medication and me don't really mix.

Ok ..things are changing ..... I was going to buy an AR and a 1911.... my budget is 1600$ the m&p sport was the ar I was getting ....but I may just buy pistols...so 2 1911's like a sr1911 and the Spartan ......now the fun begins. :)

I have owned

a bunch of 1911's and still do. I have owned sevral springfields, Colts, Rock Islands, Taurus, Kimbers and even the Ruger. I sold all my Springfields and Colts. I still have Several Kimbers, a couple Of RIA's, the Ruger and 2 Taurus PT1911's. The Taurus guns are a great deal and they shoot great. Mine are the duo-tone version so they also look great. If I could carrya 5 inch gun it would probably be the Taurus. The Ruger is also a good choice. I like the Rocks but have had minor problems with both of mine.

Why not just increase your single 1911 budget to $1600? I don't see the logic in purchasing two entry-levels.

New, stainless finish Dan Wesson Valor.

Its just me....I would rather have 2 damn SOLID guns than one ubber expensive one ...they will fill there roll in my house or on my side as good as any.....and theres money left for other goodies, ammo, mags, holsters. And maybe enough for some other 1911 like a Regent or ATI.

Gotcha. Back to original suggestions, then. Enjoy. :)

Norinco model 1911 if, you can find one. I bought on that was LNIB ($400 about 1 year ago) and it is a very good 1911. Say what you want about being Chinese but you can't deny it is of excellent quality and true mil-spec except nicer sights and the grip screws are metric.

Shot the Citadel. Slightly more expensive copy of the RIA. Buddy owns the one I fired, currently in pieces while he carefully dehorns all necessary parts. He's probably got 3,000+ through it but shelved it awhile after buying a TRP.

Believe the Girsan is Turkish, haven't seen one yet.

While you'll probably get a lot of PT1911 haters chiming in I'm not one of those, I've had my stainless PT1911 since 2008 and to date have over 19K rounds through it with out any uncommon 1911 failures being mostly ammo related, I have kept all the original fire control parts which are made through a MIM process which some detest, but in intervals of about every 3K rounds I strip the 1911 down and inspect all the parts under magnification and I haven't found any excessive wear on the parts, though my PT1911 did suffer the infamous ambi-thumb safety failure for which Taurus sent me a replacement safety within a 5 day period, my experience with their customer service has been positive and prompt, I can honestly recommend the PT1911 and would not hesitate to buy another one, I believe that the PT1911 offers the most bag for your buck in the industry, good luck to you.

The closest to stainless that Amscor produces their 1911 is in nickel.
